I'm on antibiotics and bfing... will DD be affected?

I'm on antibiotics for mastitis (and a tooth and ear infection :( I'm in the wars!), and the dr said they're fairly heavyduty and WILL go through the breast milk. I said well ok what does that mean for Jazz and her just said, well she won't be getting any bacterial infections for a while!

Ok, well thats a good thing I suppose.

But I am wondering about thrush, for her. I know I always, without fail, get thrush after antibiotics so am going to take a probiotic (on a side note, I'm never sure whether to take the probiotic during antibiotic treatment or after...? I assumed if i took it during that the probiotics would be killed by the antibiotics so I always take the probiotic after I finish... ?).

Is there anything I should do for Jazz? Will me taking the probiotic be enough for both of us? Or should I get something for her? If the antibiotics go through the breast milk, does it kill the good bacteria in the milk?

I didn't think to ask these questions at the drs surgery, so I'm hoping you'll be able to help.

Take the probiotic each day after your AB. Your BM should help to ward off the thrush for Jaz, but if she does get it, you will likely be able to get Nilstat or Genetian Violet for her. Get some Canesten for yourself in preparation and hope it doesn't show.

Yep, she may get thrush but I was never on ABs while BFing (just lucky & never needed) & all my bubba's got thrush in their mouuth anyway. Thats treatable, don't stress too much about that.
The other thing you may notice is AB poo's. Even though her poo is runny now, thereisa difference, youc an just tell. They may burn a her bum al ittle so a good barrier cream on hand would be handy.

Other then that she should be ok.

But keep feeding women!!

Your breastmilk is the best possible thing for J while you're on ABs as it will help protect her gut with all its goodies in it. I second the barrier cream suggestion for the horrible poo, if she gets a dotty rash on her bum you might like to use some canesten on her bum under the barrier cream as well. Keep an eye on her mouth but hopefully you won't have any problems.

Also now is not the time to be wearing plastic-backed breastpads - use clothies if you can and make sure the girls get an airing. This alone can help with the condition of your nipples a lot.

I was on heavy heavy duty ABs for a long time after my DD2 was born (CS wound infection plus various bouts of mastitis, etc) and she never developed thrush, only the bad runny poos.

You can give her a probiotic too because it will still disrupt her gut even though she is having BM.

after my second op and being on some pretty heavy duty AB's myself I highly recommend innerhealth plus for yourself and the Nilstat for bubs. Arabella's got thrush something shocking last week and the Nilstat cleared her straight away.
