Does anyone know the rate of caeserian delivery for premature birth (pref Australian)
Or where I could find the info... I have googled but can only find general c-sec dates.

Not really sure what your after- but i would assume that if bubs is premature it is either because of early labour.. which may lead to c section bub or mum is in danger or stressed..

I guess another thing that may lead to a premature baby being born via c section if something is found to be wrong with bubs early and labour isnt an option..

Sorry if this is a bit vauge- i dont have any numbers or anything- not sure where you would find stats like that. Are you after survival rates or just wondering how many premmies are born via c section? I wouldnt imagine there would be many compared to premmies born via vag birth.

I think it might depend on the circumstances ... like StarBright said. Also if you look at micro-premmies, I'm sure most of them are born via c/s, because a VB would damage them.

If i HAD to guess.. i would guess with less than 50% only by judging as i said that i would just assume more premmie babies would be born due to premature labour than anything else... but as i said- just a guess.

I am just editing an essay/article that a friend has written and wanted to see if there were actually any stats on it!!

Don't know if you would be barking up the wrong tree .. but can your Department of Health not give you any info? Or if you have an Statistics Office ( I know here we have something called Statistics South Africa or something other)

go to the australian bureau of statistics website, that's where I usually get all my data from for uni when I need concrete stats.

I would say prob more vag births than c/sec?? Micro prems are actually pref to be delivered vag cause of the position of the uterus too hard for c/sec. Unless there is....placenta prev,HELPP syndrome, prev c/sec req rpt, uterine rupture, APH....thats all I can think of that would warrant a c/sec. Most prem deliveries are either PROM or actually go into labour. HTH!!

I can''t give you stats but I do know that "most" prems born 28 weeks and under are born via c/section at the RBWH (Brisbane).

Premature labour that leads to vaginal birth is interestingly not common. Someone mentioned labour perhaps damaging baby - that is a risk with very prem babies but born spontaneously the damage rate is not high - though the rates of asphyxia are higher in vaginal prems as opposed to c/section prems (according to paed).

A large proportion of babies born prem is due to maternal illness - so it could be infection, preclampsia, HELLP syndrome etc etc.

I will go off and try and find some solid stats.

i dont have statistical data but am a member of a premmie forum. I know there seems to be more mums that had c/s than a natural delivery.

micro prems are usually delivered c/s because they are not fully developed going through the birth canal can harm them.
if u find some statistical data please share it would be interesting!
btw i had a c/s at 33+3weeks i was in labour for 15hrs but as soon as bubs became distressed and HR dropped they wanted him out.

Ash, you are more likely to have a prem via c/s as vaginal birth can actually do more harm than good for the smaller weighted babies. I'm not sure as to whether there would be actual statistics or not, but if I had to guess I'd have to say a good 60% of prems are born via c/s.

Not everyone gets a chance to go into PTL first. And those that do often end with a c/s because of fetal distress, fetal tachycardia or fetal bradycardia.

I had to have a c-sec with Nikita because she was in breech position - actually she had her hand and foot dangling out :lol: If I tried to birth her it would have killed her or so they said.

This is an interesting forum. I had been wondering the same. I had my bub at 33wks + 2 days (PPROM) & had a vaginal birth. The midwives at the hospital were very surprised about that & all were quite shocked that I had a natural birth. I was assuming from their responses that it was uncommon. Also when I was spending time in the SCN, getting to know the other mothers, they had all had c sections. So I too had been wondering the stats. I'd think the rate of c sect would be higher than 60%

I have run my poll, and 24 people answered. The results are:

45% had a vaginal birth, they range from 23 gestation right up to 36.
50% had a c/s
4% had a classical c/s

Interesting results!! Most vaginal births happened naturally, there was 1 induced.
The c/s all occured due to risk to the mother and child. For instance PE, placenta previa, foetal distress, ect.
