Developmental Delays

Not sure if this is the right place for this, so move it if need be mods :D

I'm just wondering if your child had them and how did you cope?

My lil man is coming up to 21 months, just gone 18 months corrected. He sees a Speech Therapist and an Occupational Therapist. The only thing he did in time with his corrected age is walk, which was also within normal ranges for his actual age.

Everything else has been slow. I realise every baby is different and we were told to expect delays, but I'm not sure how well i'm coping anymore....

I get frustrated with him because he just doesn't understand things. And it's not his fault, I know that. I just want him to know that when I saw NO that he actually shows some sort of understanding as to what that means and why he shouldn't do it.

His hearing has ben tested numerous times and it's fine. His eyes are tested regularly and they are fine. They are both tested yearly from our last appts.

It's not fazing me that he doesn't speak.... his words will come. I just want him to understand.

I'd really like to hear anyone else who has dealt with delays and how you coped? How did you deal with things like playgroup?

Hell Sally ... dd does not know what NO means. I think she might have a clue, but if she does, she is not letting me know ;) and are testing me the WHOLE time to see if I know what NO means.

:hug: Hun I can understand you are worried about Brendan, but all peads have told me that somewhere between 2 and 3 years of age, premmies catch up.

I think he might learn more if you put him in a playgroup. Just my opinion. I found that dd learned so much more in day-care and they do copy off the older kids. It's not always good behavior that gets copied.

I'm not worried so much, he will do it in his own time. It's more that I'm kinda jealous of younger kids doing things he's not. Well Jealous isn't the right word...

We've been to a few playgroups, but the children are a lot older (3-4yrs) so Brendan was left to play with the babies.... I've found a new one and will be going Friday so I hope that works out.

And your are so right, he will get there eventually .. in his own time. You just have to remind yourself about that every day :hug: And honestly ... dd was slow to begin with, but SUDDENLY she is doing stuff that I did not think she could. Someone wrote on here that a bad mother is not someone that don't do stuff for their kids, but someone that does stuff for them when they can do it themselfs. I think we (as premmie mummies) sometimes needs to stand back and let them struggle to get something done for themselves, instead of jumping up and doing/helping, because "they are behind/slow/prem/little" , kwim?? And lately I don't think of dd as a premmie anymore ... she is a little 21 month old tom-boy girl that currently has a blue eye, scratch marks, grazed toe and loads of sass ;)

DD is making me gray, because she figured out how to climb the cot from the outside .. I did not know she could!! She is also starting to get into bed on her own AND really quick to get onto the sofa/diningroom chairs/toiletseat :o . She is starting to figure out how to put on a t-shirt and has just during the past 5-6 days learned to take off her pants.

I'm a fairly relaxed mum, Brendan roams around the house and gets into everything. I dont do anything that I dont have to do for him. He walks everywhere, I dont carry him, unless across the road ect. All of our specialists have said that theres nothing really I can do, I'm already doing what I can to help him.

He's already climbing onto things, I caught him the other day on my computer chair thumping the keyboard and moving the mouse :lol:

He really is going great guns, it just gets to me sometimes. And it shouldn't, because I shouldnt let it.

He's running now too, and thats a scary thought!! He's already busted his eyebrow open on the road, he saw daddy and ran after him LOL. poor chook has a scar now.
