Just wanted to know what to expect at my first scan (8wks)? What do I expect to see? Can I keep pics? Do I take digital media with me to the ob so I can "keep" the scan? Totally clueless :dunno:

i didn't take any digital media - i was given a single printed pic (pm me and i'll send you a link if you want)
essentially they'll try to do an external scan - usually for this, they'll be able to measure the gestational sac, the baby (crown to rump length) for dating, and you should be able to see and measure your baby's heartbeat. for me, because my FS had requested a transvaginal scan, i had an internal - they also measured my ovaries (as i'd had stim drugs so they were swollen), and were able to see quite a lot. not sure how the external scan pics compare.
as i said, pm me if you want a link to my off-site blog with piccies - the 8w3d scan is on there.
Hi belle,
I saw what looked like a little cupie doll.Big head and little stubs for arms and legs.Lots of squirming too. The sonographer should print out copies for you but just ask before he/she starts to make sure. I couldnt see a profile or anything like that but the shape was there. Also not sure about a disc or video, I didnt ask, but if you contact the surgery Im sure they will tell you if they can record the session for you. Also they can poke and prod you quite firmly and it may be a little uncomfortable esp with a full bladder, dont worry though bubs will be perfectly safe.
Its all pretty exciting, emotional, etc so goodluck and enjoy seeing your new bundle for the first time. You will never forget it:p
Thanks kitten76. I can't wait. Do I have to go on a full bladder? my ob didn't give me any info!
they suggest you drink a glass of water an hour before the scan. the fluid in your bladder pushes the uterus forward and makes it easier to visualise, esp given your bub will be less than a cm long!
i have had transfers for IVF with a full bladder - it's not the most comfy thing, but also not the most uncomfy - you'll be so busy watching the screen that you'll not notice it too much - plus they usually have a loo just outside the room, so as soon as you're done you can go and empty your bladder!
i was told for tomorrows scan to go to the loo an hour before scan, then drink a full glass of water, and don't go again til after the scan...
My OB said to drink 2 full glasses of water 1 hr before my appt. If its an internal scan Im not sure if you will need to have a full bladder, Briggsy`s girl may be able to fill you in on that.I had a normal pelvic ultrasound and with all my PG`s I needed to have a full bladder.
I might call the ob for more info. Thanks girls.:D
i would assume you need the water in your bladder - my first scan, he did external initially, then asked me to go and empty bladder and swap to internal - always better to have a full bladder and empty it, than to have an empty one and need to try and fill it...
