My Dilemma
Ok. I want to have a cloth bum munchkin, I am sure of that.
My plan was to start buying the BBH osfa with the bamboo. I really like the look of them and have heard many good reports. I am expecting the bub to be a decent size, but i also have some newborn sposies already from my mum for the first couple of weeks.
I want to buy one or two BBH a week and a few covers from now until bub arrives.
My BF says buy one each of a few different brands, try them out when bubs arrives and then choose what you like and stock up later.
I can see her reasoning... but...I think my idea is better as I am not expecting much (if any) of a baby bonus and i was hoping to spread out the cost a bit. We are also building a house and will be moving in Jan, which I am expecting to be an expensive time as we settle in. And I am planning to wait till feb to start making all the other BIG baby purchases.
So ... should i stick with BBH and start collecting now.... or should i get a few different ones and wait?

i have to say that I agree with your friend. I have just started using MCN's and I can already see that some fit and suit my DD better than others. You'd hate to buy heaps of one type of nappy to find out that it doesn't suit your bub... sorry!

Why don't you just put aside that cash every week - then spend up big when bub gets here and you can try the nappies on to see what fits best? You may find its cheaper doing that than paying postage every time you have to buy a couple of nappies ;)
JMO of course!

On the whole, your friend's idea is a good one. On the other hand, BabyBeeHinds fitteds have pretty good resale value. BabyBeeHinds let you layby for about 16 weeks...so you could always buy just one and start laybying at say, 30 weeks, and if you don't like the one you have by the time bub is 6 weeks, you could cancel the layby (although I think they say they might keep 5% of the layby, which could suck if it's a big one).
Perhaps look on sites like ebay (which sell unused nappies, because if you bought them, I would recommend just using one or two before you make up your mind), or buyforbaby (which sell pre-loved nappies), to get an idea for how much certain nappies sell for.
ETA: Wait, no I like Mel's idea best. :p

You BF is making a good point and it's advice I was given when I started and have given to others.
I think you can't go wrong with the BBB's OSFM as they are a great workhorse nappy and I still use the same ones on Caleb that I bought when he was 8 weeks old.
I would also be inclined to use either flanny flats or prefolds as you say you are expecting bub to be a decent size. That way you don't have to worry too much about bub either not fitting into the nappies or growing out of them too quickly. I have bought a few nappies second hand for this bub that were hardly worn and some weren't because they were too small for the ladies 10lber. (A gorgeous 10lber I must add as I had a cluck over her when I picked them up from her house).
As Mel said postage can be an issue if you only buy a few every week so you could either start saving up now and buy a bigger package that may give you free postage included or at least save on spending $8 on postage on average for 2 nappies every week or so.

Definately agree with Mel. I spent up big before DD2 arrived only to have 10 of the ones I bought not fit her at all!!! Luckily I can pass them on to my sister. But it would have been much better to get a couple and see how they fit before you buy in bulk.

I agree with Ari. Put the money aside and then once your bub is here you can spend up big.
On a personal note though the terry nappies are worth a go. I spent heaps on several different types of cloth nappies and in the end it has been the terry ones that I use the most. They grow with bub, are a good price, make great spit rags and even do a great job on the car .
Also I found them easier to wash then the others.

Thanks for the insight guys. And good idea Mel! Why didnt I think of that!
Will have to hide the money (from myself) though.... or maybe get one of those tin money boxes that dont open without a can opener.
I hadnt taken into account the postage either. I was just planning to buy them in the local baby shop. I gues it would be cheaper to get them online, or in bulk. Going to ask the local shop if they have customer loyalty discount system.
Thanks again you wonderful women!

Ooooh you have a local retailer! Even better :D Layby perhaps...?

I seriously reccomend trying buyforbaby and getting different ones. This is what I did, I have a rather 'large' stash for a 3 month old (see blog) and would buy one second hand/seconds/new on there before buying more from the proper supplier :)
