A Big Dilemma - shall I start working??
Well, I'm a mum to a little girl who's turning 1 this Sat. Given my personal (who was in child care full time since a few months old) and professional (child psychology) background, I decided that it would be best for me to spend as much time with her as possible during her early years. I love her and adore her so much, and enjoyed every minute (though there were inevitable down times as well, but it's a part of life) with her during the past year.
Yet, I must admit that during last couple of months, I have been intching for something beyond my role as a mother. I studied for 7 years to become a psychologist, and gave birth to my daughter just when I finished my thesis. I have not worked as a psychologist yet, and would love to if opportunity arises. But then, I am also aware that this may not be the best interest of my daughter - she would rather have me with her all day, everyday. I also hear some negative things about putting young children into child care (e.g., Steve Biddulph, who's also a psychologist). I'm only contemplating to work about 2-3 days a week, but still, can't seem to avoid feeling very guilty...
I always felt that a healthy person has multiple roles in her/his life - eg, mother, daughter, therapist, dreamer, student, etc and that's is OK. But somehow, many parenting books - especially those emphasise mother-child attachment - seem to suggest that motherhood has greater bearing than other roles. And I am an attachment parenting mother, and I do believe that having a loving, warm, and connecting attachment with my daughter is one of the best gifts I could give to her as a mother. Hence, my guilt!
I would love to hear some different experiences/thoughts on this. Can you share your story? Thanks!
