Just put my ergo on for the first time - with Miss M in it - and as soon as she was in it, she tucked her head under the shoulder strap so her head was held down on my chest. Is that ok? In the dvd it looks as if their heads are lower. She is a really long-bodied baby so maybe thats why it looks a bit weird?
Its really comfy though - I'm jiggling up and down with her in it at the moment cos she is a bit grizzly (sick)
it sounds ok to me !! have you got it on firm enough?? as long as her legs are under the black straps and you have it on right , it should be save , if she is tall then her head will pop up further ..
do you have the infant insert ?? is that what you mean by tucking her head under ??
do you think she is safe ?? if in doubt , put it on again and keep doing it till YOU feel she is safe !!

I have the infant insert but thought she would be ok without it - she is nearly 4 months old - and around 68/69cm long and weighs around 6.2kg.
She is asleep on me now so must be comfy for her (I have checked - she's breathing - so definitely alive and not suffocated!!!)
Can you usually rest your chin on the top of their heads with no trouble? if I stoop a little, its a good chin rest for me...lol
Oh and my back is getting a little achy down the bottom - does that mean the hip part isn't sitting right? So many questions....

im going through a similar thing as i don't seem to be able to get my similar aged bubs in there right! i haven't bought the infant insert as shes so soon going to be out of it and normal but shes long now so i just can't seem to get it right. Imanaged her in it yesterday for a while in a kind of side sitting position but because it wasn't central it made my shoulders ache. I tried her in it the normal way and for a while she was ok but i'm just worried about her legs being too open for her age. she is quite long for her age and has great head support but i guess still abit too young for the normal possy. i took some photos yesterday so might try and post them to see if anyone has any advice also!

Euan was 3 months when I first used an Ergo (without infant insert). He was also very long, and didn't have any problems with hip extension at that age. It would depend on the baby though.
I don't believe that it's recommended to use an Ergo in the cradle position without the insert (I think that it does help to balance the weight evenly, which could be one reason why you are getting such shoulder strain Plonkeemumma, the other could be that she is too heavy or big to cradle carry with a balanced centre of gravity), and once they get to about 3-4 months they should be in a vertical front carry.
Mel, when you say that she seems too high, where on you does the waist support sit? On an Ergo it should sit on the hips (most mei tais tie at the waist, whereas most SSCs sit at the hips). This allows bubs bum to sit at bellybutton height. However, the Ergo is quite a short bodied carrier, so you may find that the top of the body only comes up to her armpits if she is long. If her head is going under the shoulder straps, you may need to tighten them, having them loose enough to fit a baby's head under might give you sore shoulders, as her body might lean back a bit and cause drag. The optimum position is for her body to be as tight to yours as comfortable.
The ideal height for baby's head is at kissing height - you should be able to tilt your head down and kiss the top of their head. But it does depend on the length of the baby. Their bum should be at bellybutton height or higher. Lower than this and the centre of gravity may be unbalanced. Although if front carrying a toddler their head may end up higher because their body is longer.
A good way to get a nice tight fit on any carrier, is to settle bubs into it, grab the straps and bounce up and down, pulling the straps tight as you go. If bubs is a leaner, you can lean back a little so that their body flattens against yours. This settles bubs nicely into the seat.
Thanks for your advice Suse - i was using a blanket instead of the insert so hopefully she was still supported but maybe she is just too big to be carried like that. I'll try your recommendations for Mel first then have another go at the front carry if not as i so love this carrier and am having to use a bjorn at the moment which i hate and no is no good for her (have bought peanut shell, tried that too -she hated it too!)

It sits on my hips - cos I get the muffin top look on the top and down the bottom...lol
I will try your suggestions - I went out just before and she seemed to be in there better - maybe i made the straps tighter or something :dunno:
Julie - good to see someone else is a newbie to infants in ergos!!!
I have one and am using with my 4 nearly 5 month old have done since she turned 4 months, never with an insert she goes on my back and tucks her head in a bit though she is only 64cm long and 6.2 kilos.
With the back thing i find if i dont get her tight anough or if she leans to one side alot then my bac gets a bit sore but only after hours. She tends to spend about 4hrs at a time in it when I am out.
