I had my scan yesterday and bub is fine but they found a large ovarian cyst. I measures 7cms. Has anyone else had a cycst whilst pregnant? What risks are there for the baby and the pregnancy?
The sonographer didn't say much and my Dr apt is tomorrow

did they just say cyst? or corpus luteum cyst?
essentially, you need to have a CL cyst to support the pregnancy in the early (first tri) of your pregnancy - it provides progesterone support and stops your body rejecting the fetus until the placenta takes over. given that they don't seem too phased, i'd assume it's a CL cyst
i had one that was measuring larger than yours, and all ok with my pregnancy - i just have a "chunky" ovary from it still...
The report doesn't mention the corpus luteum, it just says "incidentally noted is a right ovarian cyst containing a septum inferiorly."
not sure exactly what that ones means sorry Bek - at least your appointment is tomorrow....
The sonographer was not worried but he did say that it needs to be monitored.
Thanks BG
Hey BekZ
I'm in exactly the same boat as you!
At the start of my pregnancy, a scan at 8 weeks showed a couple of ovarian cysts. With the largest measuring 8 something cm's. Anyway, my obst said then that we will just watch them throughout the pregnancy and leave them alone essentially. He said possible problems that might arise with them is that they may cause a torsion to the ovary (as it is so large it may pull on the ovary) or rupture. And because of this if I had any pain, it would be worth getting to hossy quickly so thery could do surgery on it asap so hopefully it wouldn't damage the ovary. But of course the idea of having surgery at any stage of the pregnancy wasn't ideal and something I stressed about! But didn't happen thankgoodness.
Anyway, the scans throughout my pregnancy have showed that my cysts are still there (in some cases they may shrink after the first trimester, but not usually the large ones). So the plan is for me to have surgery some time after bub is born and they will remove them- only because they are so large really. And that if they remain there, there is that continual risk that at some point in time they may, like I said before, cause a torsion or rupture.
The only other potential issue that my ob has discussed with me now, is the fact that *maybe*, though probably unlikely, the cyst may stop bubby from descending down and engaging, because it may get in the way. At the moment, I'm 38.5 weeks so I have scan booked this arvo to see the position of the cysts and where bubs is sitting. Although, it may tell us nothing because it can be a bit tricky to see their exact location on the scan.
Anyway, hope that sheds a bit of light on it for you!
(I guess basically, overall, they haven't been a problem for me throughout the pregnancy, except the fact that I'll have to have surgery on my ovaries which I'm pretty scared about).
Let me know how you get on.
xx
Thanks Lee, very helpful information.
Goodluck with bub:)
Hey Bek!
Just checking in to see how your cysts and pregnancy are going?...
Thanks for checking on me Lee. Thankfully the cyst has disapeared and the pregnancy is progressing nicely.
