What age did you give your baby a blankie?

I cant remember how old DD was when I first gave her a blankie. DS became really unsettled about 10 mins ago & just wouldn't stop crying. I put him in his cot in just a singlet & nappy with the cieling fan on med as its hot but he still wasn't happy.

For some reason I thought I'd grab the blankie I have for him & give it to him to see what happens. Its one of the small square blankies with a teddy sewn in. I put the teddy part kind of under his arm... like he had his arm around it. He stopped crying straight away & brought the other hand over to touch the teddy (investigating I suppose) then he snuggled the teddy & started rolling his eyes to go off to sleep!

He's been quiet since! (about 5 mins straight now)

I have a sound & movement monitor & I will (& already do) check on him often.

Is it ok for him to have one now? He'll be 4 months old next Monday.

How old were your children when they were given a blankie? (for those of you who used one)

I've always seen its a great comfort for DD & now it seems for DS aswell (I may have to invest in a second one now for when the first is being washed LOL)

My third child was not quite 6mths old when we started using a blankie with her, but it happened by accident because it was about this time of the year too actually and she just needed a light blanket for her day sleeps so I gave her one and she took to it right away - she holds it to her nose with one hand while she sucks the thumb on her other :rolleyes: That was 4 years ago and I"m pretty sure we are going to be stitching it into her wedding dress ROFL So getting it off them can be a downside to them having a blankie.

I gave Matilda a blankie about 6 weeks ago. So about 4 and a half months old. I tuck it under her arm and she snuggles into it and licks it and sucks on it :lol: it is silk and dot minky though so I am very careful to watch her with it as silk does not breath. When she is in her cot with it I tuck it under her bed blanket so she can still feel it but it is not a risk. She does not have it at night at all, not even to go to sleep.

I think that so long as you are careful (which I am sure you are :)) then it is fine to give him a blankie.

DD was 3 months when we gave her a blankie - I did it to give her something when she started child care at 4 and a half months that would comfort her in my absence... it worked a treat. Now she is older she has the original plus a teddy that she carts everywhere.

DD was about 15 months when she started getting attached to her blankie. It's just a nice little snuggle blanket with silky edges that we got with her cot set. It was always around and im not sure exactly how she came to bring it everywhere, it didnt seem like something we encouraged, it just kinda happened. Cant go anywhere without her asking for it now.

DD had one from birth but it had a velcro loop in one corner so I could attach it to the bassinet handle and she could feel it with her arms out but not pull it to her face. I can't remember exactly when I gave it to her unattached but I guess it would be when she moved to her cot so about 3 or 4m. We have a movement sensor too, so I wasn't too worried. She LOVES hers.

DS started using one at around 3 months, he just loves it. so much so we had to buy another one as the old one wore out.

DS is obsessed with his blankie. He had it from about 5 months and LOVES to sleep with it over his face. Stressed me out at first but he moves alot during his sleep too, so generally doesn't stay there for long. He sleeps so much better with it. He is extremly attached to it at the moment for some reason.

We gave DS one about 4 months old. We noticed he liked to pull things over his face and it probably made him blink and helped him go to sleep. We used a pillow case type material so very thin and he can breathe through (anything you can put your face to and breathe through they can as well). And he has had one ever since. He now collects them and may have 4 on the go all at once. LOL

I didn't give DD1 a blankie until she was 8months, after it was suggested she would sleep better with something that smelt like me in her cot. So the first night I slept with the blankie, lol, then gave it to her. Nearly three years later it is still in bed with her. I really hadn't thought about giving DD2 a blankie yet.

I have the same blanket for Emily as you do Danielle. When she's asleep I generally take it out of her cot, just for my own piece of mind while I'm asleep as well.

DD still sleeps with her blankie, she stopped taking it places with her about 12-18 months back. I dont mind her sleeping with her blankie, I think its cute :)

I checked on DS before & he was fast asleep & not holding the blankie anymore so I took the blankie out of the cot as he'll be there til tomorrow morning now so would just prefer (at this stage) to take it out once he's asleep.

We gave both our bubs bears when they were 8 months old. "Big Bear" is my DS's best friend in the whole world and DD's "Mannie" is also a very much loved furry friend already.

Lachlan loves his blankie, he has one with the bear sewn on the corner too, infact he was given several of them, my other 2 never had one.
Hamish took to a teddy but not until he was 4 yrs old.

Lachlan has had his blankie from a few months old, he doesnt have him in his cot yet as he likes to pull things over his face, but he does have him in the pram and car seat and on the floor. he chews teddy to death and hangs on for dear life to the blankie but still likes to pull it over his face.
