Pregnancy, Warfarin/Clexane and Factor V Leiden

Hi All

I am hoping to find out if there is anyone out there who has had problems/success with with Clexane and Factor V Leiden and Pregnancy.

I have had a clot in my leg 10 years ago (age 20) and a clot in my head this year (age 30) which has put me permanently on Warfarin.

DH and I are keen to start a family early next year, I have been seeing my GP, Haematologist and OB but I would love to hear from anyone who may have been through a similar experience. I have been told I will need to come off Warfarin and go onto Clexane.

I must admit I am scared about the whole thing, pregnancy alone can be dangerous, without mixing it up with LFV.

I have FVL (heterozygous) and was treated with aspirin and clexane for DS's pregnancy until I became allergic to the clexane (and extremely rare occurrence). All was fine and for this pregnancy I was treated with aspirin alone.

From your history, you will need to be on the clexane for your other clotting issues and risks. It is seen as a safe drug because unlike warfarin, it does not cross the placenta so it helps with your clotting needs without impacting on the baby. The only issue is the dosage (should be sorted by your haematologist) and the need for injections 1-2 times per day. Best of luck in your family plans.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! How exciting!!!

Must have been terrible having a reaction to Clexane.

I have been on it a number of times before when I have had clots and also when I have had to travel OS. So fingers crossed, should all be ok.

I was on Clexane injections for the duration of my 2nd pg to help with my arthritis/blood flow. I had no reaction or long lasting effects. My son was born at 38 due to a low birth weight that was monitored from very early on. I dont think the clexane had anything to do with it as my 1st DS was also of low birthweight and born at 37 weeks and i was on no medication so i think it is just how i "cook" my babies.

Did your Dr take you off Clexane before the birth of your DS? and how soon?
Was there any concern regarding exessive bleeding?

Hi. I've only just seen this because I am only just starting to do research on this condition. I was diagnosed in January after the birth of my second son. I am 31 and for the past 10 years I have had a vericose vein on my leg that has been getting bigger and bigger. In this last pregnancy it got a lot bigger. I have been questioning doctors for years but they have all just dismissed it. But during the labour I felt a pain in my leg around the vein and afterwards my leg became very sore and bruised where the vein was. A clot formed and I went to a doctor and was diagnosed. I would like more children and the doctor told me that there is no reason why I can't have more even if I have this condition, although I am aware that the risk is increased threefold, so of course I would be careful. I didn't know anything about Clexane though so I will be researching it. At any rate, I have had two healthy babies without even knowing that I had FVL so I am not worried about going back for another.
