Tantrums & Sleep Troubles in 2 year old with new baby

My DS is a real shocker at the moment... We have a 2 week old DD and DS has just become a terror...not all the time but all too often at the moment. His sleeping is terrible (waking say 5 - 10 times a night) and he has inconsolable tantrums - last night it lasted over an hour and he was screaming the whole time. Definitely not fun when we're all exhausted from lack of sleep anyway.

Anyway, I'm just thinking...could it be just the change in circumstances at home (with DD here now)...could it be his 2 year molars coming through (one through, another is just cutting)...could it be night terrors/nightmares...could it be a combination of all of the above?!??!

Has anyone else here had their older child go crazy when the new baby comes home and if so, how long does it usually take to settle down?!?!?

We have had a few issues as well in the last few weeks. At first it was all ok but as time has gone on Iz has been a bit cheekier with James, she will deliberately hit and sit on him when we say no and normally if we say no she is really good. She is also waking at night as well but we have just put it down to the changes of having her new brother around and we have been paying her lots of attention and I mean LOTS! It is tiring when you get bub fed and to sleep and just want to flake on the couch but she really needs it and it seems to be working. We give her loads of praise when she does the right thing as well, and that seems to be minimising the smothering with love of our little man. Good luck with it - remember Riley is still so young and it is a huge adjustment for you all. :hug:

DD#1 certainly was less than perfect when DD#2 came along. She would have tantrums (which she had never had before), day sleeps went a bit awry but nights were thankfully ok.

It didn't last too long thankfully - maybe 4 to 6 weeks before she was back to her old self. Just try to give your DS some special time with his Mummy (easier said than done with a new baby I know) - bath him if you can while your DH looks after your DD, take him for a walk on his own etc. He is used to having you all to himself and now a new, noisy little interloper has come along and she doesn't appear to be leaving!
