Converting cot to a toddler bed... should I do it yet?

I'm debating as to whether or not I should convert Oscar's cot into a toddler bed yet?

I will buy a single bed for him in the next 4 months so he can be in that when bubba #2 comes along and is all settled. He loves his cot and knows when it's bed time and takes his blanky down there ready to get in... sometimes even tried to climb in :rolleyes:

So should I start the conversion now and take it nice and slow?!?

if you are going to move him again in 4 months anyway, I would wait, unless he is climbing out of it and its dangerous to leave him in there.

I thought it may have been good to get him used to having no sides on?!?! So it's not such a big change when putting him in a single bed?!

I think so. That's the way I did it and we had a nice smooth transition. I took the sides off the cot and lined the floor with pillows. She did fall out the first night, but was fine after that. Then we got the big bed and she had both cot and bed in the room so she had a choice, but she never went in the cot again!! The funny thing is, at 3 she still thinks I have to come into her room to get her out of bed.:D

not sure, I guess it depends. you know him best :) I was thinking of the 2 changes one after the other, but I guess a beds not really much more than a cot with the sides off anyway is it?

ETA Captain - DS was like that, he ysed to call out to me to come and get him when he woke up

Aw Captain... that's gorgeous that your DD still thinks you need to get her out!!

I might see if DH can take 1 side off tomorrow. The side of his cot is up against the wall so maybe if I leave 1 things will still seem a little normal.

We moved DS1 straight from the cot to a single bed, so that DS2 could have the cot and DS1 just have one transition. It worked really well. We started by reading the bedtime story on his "big boy bed", then asking him where he wanted to sleep. THe first two nights he pointed to the cot. The third night he stayed in his new bed. And we never had any problems. Recently we converted the cot into a bed for DS2 and it took about 2 weeks to get him to sleep in there without climbing out all the time. I think this is more a personality thing than anything though. Trust your instinct and do whatever you think will work best. And GL!

We just put DD in her toddler bed one night cause she didnt seem to like the cot and we had no problems.. slept in it from day one without a fuss. I really thought we would have weeks/months of hell with her getting out and then we would have to put her back in. Im still abit confused at how easy it was LOL.

We went straight from cot to single bed....one smooth move and DD1 handled it well.

I dont think id like to go from cot to toddler to single bed....id find it easier to make 1 move and then its all done and out of the way.

My DP's little girl (not mine) was bought a strawberry shortcake toddler bed by her grandparents, and it's awesome. You use a cot mattress, and it's nice and close to the floor with half rails, so that they can't fall out of bed, and they can climb in and out with ease because it's the perfect height for them.
I'm pretty sure my MIL got it off ebay, but i'm sure their pretty easy to find.
It's not so different from a single bed, but i wouldn't be very comfortable with putting a toddler in a proper single bed as kids roll around (my nose will contest to that after my stepdaughter sneaking in to sleep with us, and me copping a toddler foot to the nose at 4am) and theres a good chance they'll fall out. Especially in the morning when they get up and their still groggy.
Just take it slow with your son. It's a big change for him

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO don't do it!! :rofl: Can you tell I've been up since 6 because poppet won't stay in her bed and wanders around willy nilly in the mornings!! JK - I would take it slow hun and maybe just start with day sleeps and build up from there. We never had the option to take off the side of the cot so Im not sure how that works? Does it mean they can roll out from that height?? I agree with Kim - maybe one move will be less disruptive rather than 2 moves??
