Considering Uni in 2010
Hi all!
Just thought I would see what other people have done and how hard the STAT test is. I can't find my statement of results which has my TER on it and from memory it was just below the score needed for the course I want to do.
I am considering doing external Bachelor of Nursing through UniSA and then postgrad doing Mid. If I was to do this I would be doing it part time and considering we will get posted elsewhere before I finish, external is the only way I can really study. I think I am finally ready to get back into study. How hard is it to get HECS?
For those who have some knowledge of the Defence Community Organisation assistance with study, what would I need to do to get info on that? What help do they offer?
I don't know much about Uni or what assitance I am eligible for. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it!!

If you want to do midi have you considered just a direct entry midwifery course? Would just cut out the general nursing part of you only were interested in the maternity side? Sorry not sure about HECS or defence stuff! Good Luck!

The STAT score was the same so that is an option but I wouldn't mind having the double degree, especially if we decide to go overseas for a few years once DH leaves the army. The TER however was 30 points difference :o so if I was to find my TER and skip the STAT then I would have to do the nursing first.

I think having your general nursing is always good anyway beacuse there are so many different avenues to explore. I have worked in most areas, is great when you get bored with one area - just move on somewhere else!! Although, can't say I really love nursing, at the moment it is a job and the shift work fits in well with the kids. If it is what you are passionate about doing - go for it!!

I'm curently studying nursing externally through that same uni... Its ok although there ALWAYS seems to be some big fat problem every time I go to an exam (eg: not enough exam papers for every one).
Anyhoo, I doubt you'd have any trouble getting HECS. I think you just have to be a citizen of Australia to be eligible. I think it's connected to your tax file number and as long as you havent used up all your HECS entitlement (which you wouldnt have if you havent been to uni before) then you will get it no probs.
I thought all Uni degrees were offering ONLY hecs (aka CSP) from 2008 onwards. and that you couldnt opt to pay full fees unless you werent eligible for hecs.
STAT is not particularly difficult - Its multiple choice, and its more about the way you think and approach problems. Its not really about how much stuff you know. I found it more annoying than anything else. Did you ever do those annoying "Maths Competitions" in High School? I thought it was pretty similar to those. Have a look on the Acer website - you can get some example questions there (website is www acer dot edu dot au).

Karina I got a Credit in the last Maths Comp I did. In 2001. I also have some TAFE from doing Aquacuture through TAFE at school. I am a pretty Lateral thinker. I might have a look at that site sometime during the day so that my brain is somewhat switched on. Right now I need to go and put some pasta in the pot boiling on my stove

Hi Alioops, I so desperately want to be a midwife also. I got into a direct entry BMid at ACU on the northide of Brisbane but I'm on the gold coast and with working part time and having baby (and hopefully soon babies) it was just going to be all too hard. I too am considering doing B Nursing externally then a masters in Mid. Even though it's an extra 12 months at least when you are doing the Masters of Midwifery you are usually in a paid placement as a student midwife so are earning while learning so to speak.
Have you thought of doing BNursing externally through central QLD uni? check it out at cqu.edu.au
There is probably a campus not too far from townsville which would be heaps easier then having to go to Adelaide periodically for the prac work before your clinical placements if you're going through UniSA.
I'm considering starting through CQu next year.

Hi,
I think most of your questions have been answered but here is my two cents if it is any help.
I started Bachelor of Education via distance through Uni of Tas at the begining of this year. HECS was easy, they just sent me the paper work to fill in and I recieve the invoice at the start of each semester which I can either pay at a discount rate or defer the payment (you don't have to do anything, if you dont pay it is automatically defered).
Info re exams: When I first started I was told I would need to travel to tassie (I am based in Vic) for exams but have since found out I can arrange to sit the exam locally, depending on the uni and there rules you should be able to get anyone who can sign official documents to supervise an exam (EG: police officer or head of school). When it comes to the units with exams for me I have to provide details of who the exam supervisor will be then the exam paper will be sent to that person and I will attend a set location at the set time to it the exam. This arrangement will help save on transport and accomodation costs and also save child care arrangements. Also wont matter where you are based I am sure someone in the defence forces would be eligable to supervise your exam.
Hope this info helps.

With UniSA they tell you where to go for your exam and they organise a supervisor for you! Well, thats what they have been doing this year. So its pretty easy, you just show up at the place and time they tell you and they *should* have you exam there. (I say should because I've turned up once and there wasnt enough exams for everyone) They try to organise for you to do your exam at a place nearby where you live. Theres a girl in my course from Townsville, and I'm fairly sure she did her exams in Townsville (as in, she didnt have to travel to another town... i have no idea how big townsville is though!). I'm in Sydney and my exams have been near the city which was about 30 mintes travel for me.
