what is normal behaviour for his age?

ok, so my son just turned 1 on 7th december, for a few months now i have noticed some changes in him.

some of these are:

throwing tantrums when things are taken away (but recently he has started to give us things when we say ta)
not wanting to cuddle after his bottle anymore (this has only been in the last week)
arm flapping (only very rarely, and he has done this since he was quite young, could this be classed as normal for his age as i know arm flapping could be a sign of autism)
sometimes not responding to his name, (it can take up to 6 times saying his name before he responds)

other than these things, he seems very normal and on track, should i be worried?? i mean, is it normal at his age to not respond to his name the first time we say it? (again, it isn't all the time he doesn't respond)

He sounds extremely normal to me! My DS2 who is 14 months old has thrown tantrums from a very early age. He's getting better as he gets older because he understands more now. I bet your DS doesn't want a cuddle after his bottle any more because he'd rather play :). Arm flapping sounds pretty normal and my DS2 sometimes doesn't respond to his name either if he is busy playing and not concentrating on me, he can't do two things at once (typical male LOL).

Tantrums - extremely normal! My DD who is 15 months is doing them here and there and the health nurse said it was to be expected. Not answering to name - well I think this is because they are involved in what they are doing and don't want to respond!

Sounds normal to me too! I wouldn't worry about Autism being responsible for his behaviour because what he is doing is well within the realm of normal for a child his age. I'm sure when he's in the mood for it that he can be quite affectionate with you, but little boys have too much to see and do, they don't always have the time to cuddle Mum ;) My 15mo is exactly the same as yours and his tanties are often spectacular LOL. I'm sure he is fine, but if it is something that continues to concern you, then talk about it with your MCHN if you still see one or your GP.

DD started having tantrums at 11 months and also was an arm flapper. It usually meant she was excited about something. As for not responding to their name - I think that is the start of selective hearing!! They are either too absorbed in what they are doing or choosing not to respond.

I also agree that it all sounds normal. It is a personality thing to an extent - some do it and some don't. But it's all normal. Don't be too worried about the odd autism sign - there are so many things that "can" show a problem, but it is also common to have those signs without a problem. So don't worry.

thanks ladies for all your replies.. you have put my mind at ease to know other kids are doing the same thing.. its just hard when your a first time mum and don't know whats normal etc.... guess it gets easier next time round..
