Toddler Regression - did it happen to your child when # 2 came along ??

argh my toddler has regressed , since the birth of my DD he has heavily relied on a bottle and a dummy , it has to come everywhere ..

I knew its common for toddlers to do that . but im keen to find out more

he insists on a bottle in the middle of the night and early morning . and has a dummy constantly ..

YES i am aware that its taboo to give them dummies and bottles over the age of 1 , but its a sippy cup that he just calls a bottle ..
any way i want to know stories on toddler regression .. how long did it last and did you try and change the behaivour or let it be ??

he is fine in other ares , just the dummy and bottle ... he was such an independant little man , now he has become unsure of alot of things ..

please share your stories of advice !!

im not sure tbh but my sister does have my nephew who is 2 and my niece 1 and im sure she had a prob similar...il ask her tomorrow and il post tomorrow..sorry im no help now but i will post again for you.

Yep, my DD now depends on her dummy and blankie. She has to drag them around everywehre! She used to leave her dummy in the cot when she woke up and only slept with the blankie. Now She constantly has her dummy and will leave her blankie, but always comes back to it and often carries it around with her. I'm trying to gently encourage her not to have them dummy especially during the day and somedays it works, others not.
I have no suggestions and have no idea how long it will last. But it is a pretty common thing.

DS is very similar but ive set boundaries. He has a blankie and a dummy aswell as a sippy cup he calls his "bottle". Im fine with him having them, but ONLY at home. He may have a dummy when we are out, but only if hes having a sleep. Blankie doesnt leave the house and doesnt go outside at all. Thats the rules and i stick to them. So i guess it just depends if youre ok with it or not. If you are, set the boundaries. Tell him if he wakes in the night all he is getting is water and stick to it. No matter how much he complains. He'll soon learn.

It didn't happen with #1 when #2 was born, but it DID happen with #2 when #3 was born AND THEN #2 AND #3 when #4 was born! :rolleyes:

My DD (#2) is almost 5 and often talks like a baby (speech wise and language wise) But at daycare, she was the oldest there, so "lowered" herself to the others instead of being a role model! We took her out of daycare 6 months ago because we felt is was more detrimental to have her there than not! She improved only marginally ... we think it's because she's the only girl in the family too, surrounded by boys :dunno: But she starts school this year (kindergarten) so hopefully she'll pull her socks up!
She had a bottle til she was 3 (literally a bottle) and didn't toilet train til she was almost 3 and a half, but by 4 and a half she was completely toilet trained day and night.

My DS (#3) still had his dummy when #4 was born (but he never had a bottle or blankie or even a fave toy) and he only has it at night for bed, and he leaves it in his room in the morning when he gets up. He did get a little bit clingy, not being the baby anymore, but we figure it will pass.

We don't draw attention to their behaviour, except when DD is being overly stupid when she talks (ie pointing at a car and saying "car" 50 million times :rolleyes:) But for the most part, they are all doing things that I think is normal for their ages ...

OOh, I tell a lie, my DS (#1) was fully toilet trained before DD was born, and went back to nappies at night at 3 years old, after DD was born and it took us 3 more years to get him back out of them! :doh:

At the end of the day, I just go with the flow, as they were each obviously feeling a little bit of insecurity and just expressing it in their own ways. I think all kids deal with a younger sibling in their own ways, but usually the regressive behaviour passes when they are ready. (not much help, I know, but that's my experience)
