a lot of it depends on the course, but essentially i'd be making sure i had the books, pens etc. some courses make basic notes available online, but i always added my own notes
i also took sketchy notes myself at lectures, and then had nice neat folders that i rewroted everything in - it was a learning tool for me - rewriting, and elaborating from memory on my cruddy notes, helped me to absorb it all - i was FORCING my brain to recall it all and write it down kwim?
take advantage of the sales hun - keep an eye out for safeway/woolies 1c books - they're fantastic! and if you're paying only a few cents for a book - well, if you end up NOT needing them, you have kidlets that will be learning to write and draw things soon enough!
Depends on the course. I found spiral bound note-books the best, much easier to flip backwards and forwards (which I needed to do often!). Also, those coloured tabs that the post-it note people make were invaluable to highlight important note pages and write on.
Not much else really. A laptop was my favourite piece of study equipment, taking it to the library saved me a lot of doubling up when it came to note-taking and a lot of time.
