My DP has always wanted a ****y, instead I thought I might surprise him with a Baby ****atiel for his birthday in Feb. We have a great pergola/backyard area, and I thought I could get an outdoor aviary for him/her..or maybe two if they are not tooo pricey..
Does anyone have a ****atiel? Are they noisy, hard to look after ?
I would also welcome suggestions for another type of bird to buy him.
I have only ever had a canary !

****atiels are awsome! Hand raised ones are the best. I would look for a breader rather than buy from a pet shop.
You should buy two, and hand raised are best. BUT will he be prepared keep handling them on a regular basis? It's really important to keep the hand raised part going, and birds can be such a great addition to the home.
We have a sensational Indian Ringneck Parrot and we just adore him.
Have you been to a shop to check some birds out? OMG I did last week and even though I don't want anymore pets I nearly came home with half the shop!
Lulu, I have heard that if you get a pair they tend to bond to each other rather than the owner??
Thanks girls for your reply's, DP would be great handling the bird, I am getting it for him to spend time with, as he loves the back yard, his well laid out shed in Footy Season, so the ****atiel's first wirds will be "go the bombers " I am sure if it ..
Ooh I'm not sure actually. Our bird was hand raised by Dp, we had another given to us as a baby but it was just before Mitch was born so it didn't get enough attention when it needed, and it was always a little nutty.
I think my Bubba was lonely by himself though so that's why I'd say to give it a friend. Maybe it would be better to give him one and then decide if he wants to add to the cage?
Bubba had an awful lot of attention before the babies were born and he was such a huge part of the family. He used to fly around the house and try and impress the ladies by sitting on their shoulders and whispering in their ears, he loved to share a cup of tea and if you weren't careful he would fly to the edge of your plate and help himself to your spagetti! Oh and he used to wolf-whistle at me every morning :o.

Awwww - I definaltly want one too.. How ironic Lulu - your ****atiel was called "bubba" thats what my dp and I call each other, he calls me big bubba and I call him extra large bubba ... now we just need a birdy bubba and a baby bubba, my darling DD is called Junior bubba
Ours is actually called Bubbalouie - quite a character! I remember getting a bit miffed one day when he whistled at my friend! I thought I was his one and only :redface:.
I just sent the poor bugger up to Dp's. He wasn't getting enough attention here, I couldn't have him fly with the little kids about. FIL had a ****atoo for about 20 years before he died so he is thrilled to have another bird again. He was trying to take a phone message yesterday but Bubba kept flying off with the pen, so cute.

There's no way Lenny would eat spaghetti or tea! :o He likes carrot, but only if fed to him by hand :rolleyes: and enjoys snuggling up to DH and blowing kisses. I'm not often treated so affectionately but when I am it is a real treat :D
WLB, you know my thoughts already, but I thought I might ask how much you and your DP are at home? If you work long hours it might be a nice idea to have two.
When I started working full time I used to worry for Lenny getting lonely. But by then he had been on his own for a couple of years (I had been studying and would spend my uni afternoon "study time" with him out of his cage and talking to him when he'd let me) and I was told by a vet friend that he was probably too old to appreciate a friend - he'd probably be more resentful than anything else.

Lula - Bubbalouie sounds great, I am glad he is keeping your FIL company, I love thats pets keep everyone company
Snacks : I have decided to go with two, as we have the room for a nice aviary, that is well preotected from wind, etc, and I like the idea of birds being out in the fresh air chirping away, we will def bring them inside to get used to us, we are home heaps, we have a burmese cat, who is a treasured part of the family, so we are always around.. HMMM Cats and ****atiels, oh Millie is a woos - she ran from a bird the other day :rofl:
I am def going to suggest the Bubba "louie" type theme in naming our new additions
