Naming after a parent
Hi everyone,
Just want people's opinions about this. I like middle names to have a meaning rather than just because I like the name (it's been hard enough for me to find a first name that I like!). We're decided on the middle name if we have a boy (after my husband's middle name), Zac Christopher, but if we have another girl, we're stuck. My DD's middle name is my late mother's first name, that was easy. But if we have another girl, we don't like anyone else's name for a middle name. My first name fits perfectly though as a middle name, Skye Nicole. Do you think it's a bit self indulgent to name your child after yourself? I don't really have a problem with it but am wondering what other people think?
- Nik :-)

It is not at all self indulgent! A friend of mine did it only weeks ago... Had a girl and named her Eliah Nicole (Nic being the mums first name) It sounds beautiful and I too think its lovely to have middle names with meaning.
Good luck with it all :)
-
Nah I think its fine. I would have probably done the same thing except I HATE my first name - so I gave her my middle name as one of her middle names.
And you are right - it sounds fantastic!

People don't seem to think that naming a boy after his father is unusual so why would it be any different with mum? The name sounds absolutely beautiful and I would definitely keep it exactly as it is.
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and I hope you get the birth experience you want.

my Aunty has her mothers name as her middle name, and DH has his dads name as his middle name.
Its not an uncommon thing.
If we have a girl the middle name will be after DH's aunt, and if its a boy will have DH's dad (dec) name and my brothers name as the middle names.
If you like it go for it.

I have a maternal naming tradition - the firstborn daughter has her Mum's name as her first middle name. I'm C... Frances. Mum is Frances Fay. Her mum was Fay Veronica.... etc etc.
I think it's cute. If I have a daughter (well gotta find a man first LOL!) she'll be XXXX C....

I don't think so...both my brothers have my dad's middle name...i think it's a nice and subtle

I think its a lovely gesture. Both my sons middle names are named "for people". DS1 has two middle names, the first for my DH's uncle, the second for my brother (both are dec.) DS2 also has two middle names the first is just a name that we like, the second for my father and a close friend of ours who share a name. If we ever have another boy, his second middle name will be after another close friend of DH (dec), however a girl would have all her own names, although one of the middle names would be the same name as one of my friends daughter (but that's just co-incidence - both boys were threatened with that name had they been girls and DS1 is older then our friends girl).
BTW I love your name choice.

I think it's nice!
I like middle names with meaning too.
-
I love it :) That's beautiful.
Divvy- That is very sweet!
There was 'family name' in my dad's family for years.. all the boys were William Henry XXX Surname, and they got called by the XXX. Thankfully my mum broke that tradition with my brother, cause I didn't want to carry it on ;) It's a bit old fashioned for my tastes.
My dh chose ds's name-he took my name and his, and put the letters together to see what name he could make. I really didn't like the one he came up, but it's grown on me.

My daughters middle name is my first name. I decided (and DH is going along with it) that our kids will have our names as middle names. However, if our next child is another girl I don't know what I'll do. I might still give it my name as a middle name or I might use my daughter's name as a middle name.

I like your choices Nik. DD's middle name is after my late gran and if we ever have another girl her middle name will be after my MIL. I also like middle names to have a family meaning.
My god time flies.... Not long to go now!

Oh WOW. I didn't think I'd get so many replies! Thank you so much for your input ladies. It's really made me feel so much. I think we might go with it then. I think it's such a pretty name.
Divvy - that's a really sweet tradition. I didn't realise people did that!
Danni - I didn't even think about using DD's name! That's a great idea....although Amy doesn't sound as nice as Nicole.......great idea though!
Jen - Time really is flying isn't it!? I'll be in labour and holding this bub before I know it!
Thanks again ladies and thanks for the well wishes on the birth. I really appreciate you all taking the time xx Nik

I dont think it's any big deal. My college friend want sone girl so she can name her after herself completely, Marlena Sage. On Gilmore Girls Rory's real name was Lorelei like her mother.

We mum is Diane & my younger sister is Amanda Diane. My dad is David & my brother is also David, his middle names are both grandfathers names. Zander is Alexzander David Paul, David from my dad & Paul from Aaron's dad. So yep, no issue with it over here ;)
-
Not at all. My middle name is my Mum's name and our baby boy born last month has Daniel as one of his middle names which is DH's name. His other middle name was one of my grandfathers middle names (he had 2 middle names too). I think Skye Nicole sounds lovely!

I have always liked derivatives of my name - Amelie and Amelia and I wouldn't hesitate to use one of those as a middle name in the future.

Our tradition is the mothers name is the baby's middle name, my Nana was Mary Josephine, mum is Bernadette Mary, I am Louise Bernadette and my first daughter is Maria Louise.
