comfort sucking to sleep
Hi, ds is 13 weeks. sometimes he can self settle, mainly the first sleep of the day, but if this only ends up being a 40 mon nap, it throws the rest of the day into chaos, and the only way he will then get to sleep for all the day sleeps is by the breast-fed to sleep, think cos he has had the 40 mon sleep in the morn, he is overtired by the arvo.. it throws us so out of whack, and it is so tiring, it has just taken me like 1.5 hrs to get him to sleep, and i wont be surprised if he only does 40mins today, as he is overtired, and has been fed to sleep by the breast. its a shocking habit, but its that, or he screams the house down when i put him to bed,. i have tried patting him, he hates it, refueses the dummy. Also he is sucking his hands a lot, does this generally mean he is hungry, or is it more a comfort thing. I know he can self settle, but he is refusing to self settle more then he will at moment. I want to break the habit of falling asleep at the breast, as i think it is comfort more then hunger, but then he is sucking a fair bit each time when i offer it to him at bedtime.. it is so tiring.. My ds(2) was the opposite, he wanted to be rocked to sleep all the time, and i broke this habit when he was 5 mnths, i dont want to fall into bad habits again.. i have tried feed play sleep routine, but it isnt working with a busy 2 year old.. oh well hope it all falls into place soon..

do you mean 40 mins for the whole day or just for a cycle?
My little man doesnt do feed/play/sleep either - tried, but same as you, with others running around - but I am lucky he is very easy by comparison
Yes, he has just found his hands at 3 months so doesn't mean hungry, just keen to find out what they do and taste like.
Is he wrapped?? That would be my suggestion for the hands bit.
Also, I would try and use 1hr15mins as a guide for a awake time and wrap him then, even if you have to cuddle for 10 mins - nice for you and him - cos sounds like he is getting very overtired. Even if that timeframe is a bit early, you will start to see him relax more into it rather than fighting it cos the window of opportunity has gone with first tired signs.
Hoope some of that helps - trial and error good luck :)

Hi- 40mins sleep cycle,. no some days he may do 3 x 40min sleeps, but it could take me 1.5hrs of feeding him to sleep to get a lousy 1c sleep cycle- such hard work. but then other days he may self settle and do 2 x 2hr sleeps. so each day is different.

December - I am going through the same thing and this week has been particularly bad cause Olive is sick. I usually feed her emb with some BFs but I put her to the breast lots for comfort. In general though if she doesn't fall asleep after her bottle she will fall asleep on the breast because i'm a wuss and if she makes a fuss it's easier to do that. Sometimes she is rocked to sleep which I think is marginally better but she used to self settle so not sure where I went wrong. Olive is also 13wks so I will be looking forward to suggestions as well. Sorry I wasn't any help but I am in the same boat.

I agree with Sami's advice, it sounds like he is over tired to me.
Have you got a nice little routine happening so that he knows it is nap time? I would try and do they same thing each time it was time for a nap. Wait for the tired signs. Whinging for 'no reason' was our main indicator. I'd check his nappy, give a cuddle and bit of a sing song its time for a little sleep kind of thing and then put him down with the curtain open and play his mobile thing above his bed.
Usually he would go down with out a fuss, sometimes a bit of a whinge but drifted off soon after. If he took a trip to hysteria land! I would get him back out, have a little cuddle and do the same thing minus the nappy :)
Might help you...worth a try anyway?
