Upset after a visit to my Community Nurse

hi all

Just had a visit to the nurse today for the 6 month check - Ethan isn't rolling from his back to tummy as yet, but can roll from his tummy to back (eventhough he doesnt like being on his tummy, he just doent seem confortable and cries as soon as i put him on his tummy, but i do give him tummy time each day).

Should Ethan be rolling more and even attempting at crawling?? (As my nurse said some of the babies aged 6 months in her mothers group are doing this) Just feeling a bit upset and worried that Ethan is behind - he is very happy though and doesnt seem to be affecting him.

Also looking at trying to get rid of the dummy. Any tips? Is it too young to get rid of it? But i think the earlier the better.......what have you tried?

Ok well this is just my opinion i would not worry about him not rolling yet, he can roll one way which means that really he is not behind as you said her does not like it on his tummy so that probably why he does not roll onto it..
My first son did not roll till 9 months as he was a chubby lazy baby but he rolled and crawled in a matter of days and was walking by 1. So i don't think there is nything to worry about. if you aare concerned then see someone but i don't think its a problem.

With the dummy thing when YOU are ready its a piece of cake it will take a few days and he won't even remember what to do with it. I took it off lachlan at about 8 months because he had a cold and could not suck it!!!!!

Hi there. I wouldn't be at all worried at 6 months about his development. He seems right on track. I can't remember when DS rolled from back to front but am pretty sure it wasn't before 6 months. He didn't crawl till 9 months and then walked at 10 months. So one milestone isn't indicative of how other milestones will go. I also wouldnt worry about the dummy. A paediatric dentist told me you dont have to worry before 2 years about dummys on their mouth/teeth development and a speech pathologist it doesnt affect speaking if they are only using it for sleep. As long as they take it out when starting to try and talk their speech should develop fine. I personally just feel that If it gives them comfort then why take it away? We are starting to phase it out now as DS can understand what we are saying and can make the choice to give it up himself. I hope this helps. :)

DS rolls tummy to bck, Back to side thats it, no where near crawling and not sitting unadaided.

Dont stress they all do things in there own time, i was told my a physio when he was 5 months that he should be rolling etc.

He is a happy healthy baby who prefers to be held so he can stand up!!!

There is certainly nothing to worry about. As the others have said all babies do things and develop at different rates. DD also didn't like tummy time and would only roll from tummy to back until about 9mths. She only started crawling 2mths ago and is not walking yet.

Just second and thirding evryone else- don't worry about his developement. My ds rolled both ways at four months, but didn't crawl till nine and isn't walking yet.

With the dummy- if youa re having any issues getting bubs to sleep or keeping them alseep, I'm say get rid of it now. My ds still wakes a few times every night because he can't find his (and often I can't either, even though I've out three in the cot with him!) and I wish I had taken it off him when he was younger- I just don't have the heart to now , he is very attached to it (hence my ticker :))

But if it's not causing problems, I'd say it's not a problem :) Dummies can be a mum's best friend, especially during that arsenic hour ;)

Nope, I don't think Ethan is behind! My DS didn't start rolling from back to tummy until about 6.5 months. At 6 months we even went to the see the child physio at the recommendation of the CHN. The physio told me I had nothing to worry about. And she was right!

I always ended up getting upset after visiting with the nurse. To the point that I made DH take DS in the end.
They always managed to say something to me to make me think that J isn't developing properly.
Don't worry about it. DS didn't roll the other way till about the same age., and didn't even attempt crawling till 10 months, or walk till 15 months.

I totally agree with everyone else. Sometimes MCHNs make me mad!

FWIW, in my mother's group there are 8 kids all within a few weeks of another another (now almost 7.5 months) and none of them are crawling. Some are trying, but not there yet, not even commando crawling. All are rolling tummy to back, but not all are rolling back to tummy (including my bubs, who is like yours- hates being on tummy). The rolling thing only happened for them all in the last few weeks.

So don't freak out. Your bubs is fine!
