ummm....urine collection?

Sorry awkward question but I need to collect urine from Mackenzie for the doctor and not really sure how to do it!!

The past 3 days - well mornings and nights she has been VERY feverish and irritable. Neurofen does the trick and then she goes downhill again. The doc checked ears, mouth, tummy etc. and said everything was fine so trying to collect sample. She hasn't eaten today which I know is quite normal but I have just let her b/feed whenever. Poor little things just sits on my lap.

I have no idea when she wees so can't predict it. Mum gave me on of those little guard things that has a bag attached but it didn't work....urine in nappy instead! I thought about letting her crawl around in the nude and hope that I see her start but that was quite tedious too! The doc suggested a potty but I don't have one and when I sat her on a bowl she WAS NOT impressed!

So any ideas on collection and what could be wrong would be great!

Nappy off time, or those silly bags. I actually went to the pathology collection centre and had them put one on, just after I gave her a big drink of diluted juice... then I went for a walk for 30 minutes and came back for them to get it off. I went through 6 bags before that!!

I've had to do it for both of mine, but DS was much easier than DD!
I think with DD I stuck the collection bag on, then put a nappy loosely over the top so she wouldn't pull the bag off. I stayed really close to her, and finally I could hear the wee going into the bag, so I picked her up straight away to make sure it would go straight down into the bag, and not escape out the sides. - mind you, she wasn't at the crawling stage yet... so thats gotta be tricky...

Its ususally best to collect it in a sterile bag or container, as other bugs can contaminate the sample.

I would be smelling her wet nappies to see if they are smelling funny or bad, and keeping an eye on if she seems to be crying in pain when she wee's, as these can be sure signs of an infection. And its always better to start the AB's sooner rather than later when its a case of bubs with a UTI.

When I have had to do it I have given her a big drink, then sat with a waterproof absorbent mat over my lap and held the jar under her. It is tedious and annoying and I don't like doing it, but sometimes it is really important.

Shame the bag thingys dont work - my mum has given me a few if and when the time arrives i need to collect a sample from the girls...

Good idea with the drink - give her a big drink then i always find my DD#3 wees when watching the bath fill up.....worth a try.....

Those bags can take a bit of practice to get on right. But basically, you need to put it on so the larger end is right at the bottom of the lips of the vagina... think of it (vagina) as a spout and gutter downpipe type set up. The wee comes out the spout, down the downpipe and spills out. So if you set the bag up so it catches it at the bottom, you'll almost always have success. Of course, you can always get the GP or pathology centre staff to put it on for you.

I've always found the best way to get a sample from DD is to give her a drink, put it on, give nappy free time and then I usually have a sample within 15 minutes. I found that if I put the nappy on over it (regardless of how loose I made it) it just made it more irritating for DD.

We had to collect wee from DD at 10 weeks old, so a bit different to your situation. we just had to sit there and watch her and catch it in a cup...those little bags wouldnt work for us, but the nurse hadnt been putting them on right, found that out later. hope you work it out.
