ducks? what other options

i would like to get DD a pet,
Furry ones are out of the question.. and fish arent fun

wondering if you can keep ducks in a domestic yard?
what do you need to set up?

What about chickens? Then you can eat the eggs too! YUMMO! Don't know about where you live, but I looked on our local city councel website that had info about land size, and how many of what kind of animal you can keep - ie. the bigger the land, the more chickens you can own.

Is a guinea pig too furry?

lol - fur allergies here lol... i assume a guniea pig would be ok???

how much would you need to set up to care - anyone have these types of pets?

you would need an enclosed cage/run area for either a chicken/duck BUT do remember they area needs to be kept clean!!! or you will get RATS!!!!!!

PP what about a bunny??? rabbit 'fur' is actually non allergenic..it is the bunnies saliva that one would react to if they are going to react at all.

Katones - Rabbits are illegal in QLD :-( I really really want one and when DH told me they were illegal i thought it was just because he didnt want one - but have since found out he is right :-(

You can get dogs with 'hair' not fur. We have a maltese and he is 'non-alergenic'. i have a friend allergic to fur and she has a labradoodle and she is fine with him!

i forgot about that QLD stupid rule...yes so are ferrets illegal there.

I used to have pet ducks. I lived on a pretty big propertly tho. But at one point i ened up witha female & of course they bred. I had heaps of them & ended up giving 1 to a friend of mine who lived in a house in Lismore. SHe had a pretty small yard. She had that duck for ages, till she moved & the new place wouldnt allow it there.
Ducks are great pets. They are like dogs. U can train them & they are extreamly loyal. U dont need alot of stuff to keep one. Just a small fenced off area in ur garden if u dont want it messing up the rest of ur yard. They wont really mess it up to much unless u have a vege patch or u have been digging it up urself & they see worms. They dont really need a pond or pool or anything, altho its good for them to get wet every now & then. U could just get a small kids pool or something.
I got my ducks at 3 days old. They stayed inside with me, in a box. Coz it was winter i used to put a lamp over the box to keep them warm.
Food is pretty cheap. U can get it at pet shops i think or when buy bulk from like petfood warehouses or places like norco(if u have that anywhere near u). They also eat scraps, they do need to have the grain as well tho.
The only bad thing i would have to say it the poo. They poo heaps.

we have a shell pool for our chooks. (the shell pools kids use for sand or water)

works great. i know they will always have water. would work for ducks too

i know for sure ferrets are on the 'banned' list BUT seriously they are not kiddies pets :p

Main problem with Ducks is they poo. A lot. Everywhere. I had a pet duck (well it turned out to be a drake) but we were on a large block. Alright if you have a permaculture garden, but you might want to fence off your outdoor living area so you're not stepping/sitting in it all the time.

I'm with the others...How about a guinea pig or two? You could always go to the pet shop for a trial allergy run before commiting.

Otherwise, go reptilian - a tortoise is interesting.
