Gunky eye question
Poor Zachery has had a yuck eye since birth. In the hospital they were using Eye Steam to help fix it, but never worked. When we came home it started to get worse so the midwife suggested i get some saline solution to help. Our local chemist didnt have any left but suggested Fess Little Eye wipes. I have been using them since Tuesday with no luck still.
So tonight i decided enough was enough im off to the doctors. I get there to be told due to Zach not being on our Medicare card yet, he cant be seen. They say i can pay $53 and then the dr will see him, so i agree. Then their EFTPOS machine is down and was rudely told id have to go and get cash out somewhere then come back. Ahh...no i dont think so...he is 9 days old im not trampling all over town to get cash out, to come back to the drs to be seen.
I left and thought next option, breast milk might help (id not tried this yet...).
So....after all that info that probably isnt relevant.....my questions are:
How often do i put BM into his eye?
It cant hurt it can it?
How much (i just dropped a few drops in each eye before)?

I squirted BM into a small cup (like a bottle lid) and then used a syringe and dropped it into Jovie's eye. She had a gunky eye and that cleared it up in 2 days!! We use eye drops in the vet clinic every 4 hours, so thats what I did for Jovie.

It won't hurt him at all :)
The way I used to do it was to wait until bubs was asleep, then drip a bit into the corner of his eye, so it kinda pooled in the inner corner. Then I'd move the baby very slightly, so it kinda moved into the eye. When he would wake up, the gunk would be completely gone, it is magical wonderful stuff, that breastmilk!
Another way is to express and use a cotton ball. Dip it in, wipe from inside to out and only once.
I prefer the squirting-in-the-eye method, myself

Yeah I did the same with breastmilk or just went it needed cleaning. My son is 3 months and still has a gunky eye but we have found out he has a blocked tear duct. The eye specialist said 99% of the time they open up by themselves.
Or you can use cooled boiled water as well.

Ahh eva suffered on and off from gunky eyes for months (blocked tear duct).
I used to collect breast milk in a cup and then use a cotton ball to wipe it over her eye... then I realised a few weeks later, why do that when I can just squirt it straight in? LOL
I would do it every 3-4 hours, depending on how the eye was looking. Sometimes this was enough to manage it, and the gunk would clear up, but on some occasions I did have to go to the Drs for a script of antibiotic eye drops.
You can also make your own saline solution using sterilised warmish boiled water, and salt added to wipe over the eye (starting at the inner corner, then to the outside).
Goodluck, hope it clears soon!

Thanks ladies....
I have been squirting it in, makes it looks worse for a while but im hoping it clears it up. My girls never had it this long and certainly not from birth!

My ds still has a gunky eye and he's 6 months old i constantly clean it and squirt bm on it but still has not cleared up hopefully it will clear by itself soon.
