With the financial world as it is atm... i am wondering how many of our DP's or us have been affected by losing our jobs?
What did you do?
I know DH's company has cut a few hundred employees this year... and we are waiting to see if more are to come :(
Not my DH (thank goodness!!!) but I was made redundant just after Christmas...not much fun.
My DH hasn't been made redundant yet, but we fear it could be around the corner. We are hoping his team get a contract they are trying really hard to win, if they do, they will have guaranteed work for 12 months. It's such a horrible feeling not knowing, like we are holding our breath.
I really don't know what we'll do, we'll be in strife if he can't find a job pretty soon afterwards.
DH's brother got made redundant a week ago, he has a wife, a two year old and a 4 month old :(. It really hit home and made me see the reality of it all.
I have my fingers crossed that your DH keeps his job too :crossfingers:.

DH works for a large company and one of their international affiliates (BIG company) laid off 20,000 employees worldwide about 2 weeks ago.
I am worried about what the next few years will bring, especially with 2 little ones at home and one on the way.
We're not too worried yet - DH is the most experienced in his office - so it will be two other staff members to go before him. However, if they both lose their jobs - well.. then I'll start stressing!!!!!
Who knows - government might have to support us all soon - maybe they should keep some money up their sleeve? ;)
LOL Mel, yep, I think the government should keep a little money handy too :)
Willow - I know how you feel about two little ones and another on the way. I have nightmares of having to sell our house and move, having to put DS1 into a new kinder, losing my business because we can't stay in our house, etc... Not a nice feeling!
I wish there was a crystal ball that showed how long this recession will last.
DP seems to be "safe" for now. I was made redundant just before xmas, while still on mat leave. I was quite happy about it because now I don't have to return to my job! :) This is my 2nd redundancy in 10 years and both times, I've been happy about it because I always look at it as a new opportunity to try something else....this time it's being a SAHM.
Laranna - I'm looking at it the same way most of the time because I was very unhappy in my job and looking to do something else. So I'm going to try to concentrate on studying and being a mum for the time being. I've tried to get some temp work but nothing has come up so far - not sure if my prg has affected my chances. It shouldn't be relevant with temp jobs but some people have strange views on it I guess.
My payout was decent, enough for us to get organised for the new bub and DH has a good wage. I don't *need* to work but we will miss the extra money.
If DH lost his job it would be disasterous - in simple terms we'd probably lose our house if he couldn't get another job quickly.
We've worked hard over the last 12 months to clear all debt except our mortage (still have a bit to go on our cc but that won't take long) so we're not in such a bad situation for the time being.
My DP is self employed (building industry) and normally has work racked up for months. He finished a job 2 weeks ago and has another small one starting in 2 weeks but nothing after that.
My work is flat out but I am due in 7 weeks and was hoping to take a month or 6 weeks off, but it looks like that may not happen. Fortunatly I work from home.
We are moving into our brand new house this weekend and while we have kept our mortgage right down by doing most of the work ourselves, there are a heap of jobs that are needed to be done by outside people (shifting dirt, fencing, driveway ect) that we just wont be able to do on one wage.
So while it is not the end of the world, we are certainly going to have to be very careful for the next while.
Heaps of others in the building trade are in the same boat.

Sad to say it like this, but I am damn lucky that I about to receive a significant inheritance from my mum - when her repugnant partner takes his illgotten gains through the solicitors.
It's possible XDH might lose his job next month :( It will be becasue the company oges under so no pay out or anything. I don't know what we'll do if it happens...to be honest we'd be screwed. Worked out the government would give me $1000 a fortnight - how do I support myself and 3 kids on $1000/fortnight?
I'd haev to get a full time job which after childcare and everything would leave me with next to nothing. Have to move to a crappy area and send the kids to crappy school. I'm trying not to think about it too much...
2 weeks ago DH looked as though he was losing his job, but they've just secured the job for the renovations to the hospital here, so now they have heaps of work.
I've just got a job at centrelink, so I now have a secure job.
But I do feel for each and every one of you who have lost jobs. It's such a scary time. My dad is a builder and he only has 3 weeks of work left, then nothing. My parents are really worried about their financial position.
nope never had hubby made redundant/retreanched.
his line of work there is ALWAYS going to be positions as supermarkets need their stock and they also need people to run the warehouse...people can't go without food...

Not DH but I have been twice. Imin a professional job (apparently - dunno who decides these things) so if he were redundant we'd be OK, but when I am its not so good. The last time though I got a reasonable payout and we were able to build out house and have bub2. If it were to happen on/after mat leave we'd be OK til January, but not after that.
He will probably alwyas be able to get a job doing what he does but it doesnt pay well and we wouldnt be able to survive on it wihtout selling our house and significantly changing our lifestyle. And it'd still be hard.
The IT company DH worked for went into administration in December, so he's been a house husband since. We built our life around living off my piddly wage, so while the extra money is wonderful (and means we pay our shoebox of a house off quicker), we can still just get by on my wage, through tightening our belt. DH has got an internet business on the side and that gives us a little more breathing space.
I'm on paid mat leave, and have another 2mths off (but will have no leave left after this!) With a bubs on the way, we are looking at this time as the 'once in a lifetime' opportunity for us both to spend time with bubs when bubs is a newborn. In every 'bad' situation there is always a light glowing!
DH was told back in October that there would be redundancies. The company reduced the numbers in 2 waves and DH was told 26th Jan and shown the door at the end of that week. DH worked in Auto Finance and the company he worked for has since announced another 400 job losses in another area. I guess you just hope and pray that it's not you. He is now looking to go back into an industry he was in 6yrs ago as we don't believe there is any jobs in Auto Finance that can weather the storm.

DH hasn't yet but he works in IT and for a small company. They have a few big contracts and he tells me he is safe... but I worry. My contract expires end of July and although I could probably get work relatively easily, I'd have to go back to 24/7 shift work which doesn't work well for us. DH is currently pushing for me to be a full time SAHM but this concerns me as I worry what we'd do if he lost his job...
We moved to Mackay 1st of December last yr for DH's job and his boss told him he is guarenteed that nothing will happen to his job and his hours won't be cut. WELL..........a month ago he got told that he will no longer be paid travel which is 6 hours extra at $52 per hr on a 60 hr week. I know its only $300 per week but that is alot to us at the moment cause we planned to be here for a yr and payout all our debts to go back to brisbane with no debts!! Grrrrrrrrr...............So now we are moving back next month to live in a cheaper rental house cause rent here is extremely expensive and DH is just going to fly in and out at $49 per flight!!....Ok vent over now!!....
