Hello everyone
Well, I'm having an amnio on 18 February.
Anyone had one and what are they like?
Anyone had an m/c because of one?
I've heard the odds of m/c are very low (1%).
Any other advice you could give would be appreciated.
Thanks,
LP.

Hi lesty,
I've not had amnio but I have had CVS - I believe they are similar in technique but the cells are sampled from a different area. Someone will correct me if I am wrong!
Anyway - you can expect a local anaesthetic on the tummy which will sting, then they insert a long needle into the uterus. It is done under ultrasound so they can see where the needle is going and obtain the right samples.
With mine I felt a tugging sensation that wasn't too pleasant but didn't hurt. Might be different for the amnio.
Afterwards I felt tender in the abdomen and they tell you to rest and not do any sort of lifting for 24 hours. If you experience intense pain or any bleeding at all, you are to go straight to emergency.
My procedure was handled with the utmost professionalism and I was as relaxed about it as one can be in this circumstance.
I hope it all goes well for you. Let us know.
Also, just to let you know, my DS risk was a lot worse than yours - 1:20. And we are fine - I'm 38 weeks with a normal, healthy baby girl. All of our tests came back clear.
Thank you OP.
My original assessment was 1:2 for Downs. I insisted upon another scan and BT and this is the new assessment 1:230 - quite different from the first.
It's a long story, but it has been a long road to get to this point. I'm not even sure I want an amnio, so I'm still in the thought process - hence looking for some stories of experience.
