Need advice - blood in bub's diarrehea(s?)

Bub has had diarahea (know this isn't spelt right) since Tuesday afternoon. He had a lot of runny poos on Tuesday night. The diarahea slowed a bit on Wednesday because he didn't really eat but this morning I changed 6 nappies between 6.30am and 10.30am.

The last two nappies I noticed had a fair bit of bright red blood, so I called 13health. They said go to emergency but I rang our local DR and got in there. I took the nappy and they took a stool sample but it will take about 5 days for an answer.

What do you think I should do - should I just go to emergency? Will they be able to do anything different??

The DR said bubs wasn't dehydrated. I have been BFing him as much as possible.

What do you think I should do? He is sleeping now. Bubs doesn't have a big temp...he did on Tuesday night.

Take him to emergency. I am not medically trained but blood in stools is not a good sign at all. I am sure you would feel better if you take him to emergency now like the people on the phone said than wait 5 days for results that could show nothing but also could show something really serious that needed earlier medical intervention.

Things that can cause blood in diarrhoea include:
- anal fissure(cut) from the stress of the diarrhoea
-dyssentry - a disease caused by protozoa (usually in countries with poor hygeine and ingesting contaminated water)
- gastric ulceration

You said the blood is bright red, which indicates possible bleeding from lower in the tract giving fresh blood. My first thought would be stress bleeding from the anal region/rectum. I agree with what has already been said, take bub to emergency. diarrhoea and bleeding is cause for concern in the newborn especially if you don't know what's causing it.
