Any input into the pros and cons of a toddler bed versus a full size single bed? I need to move Ds out of the cot for our newborn and not sure what size to buy.
I am leaning towards a toddler bed in Ikea at the moment. Our cot converts to a toddler bed though, so if I buy a smaller bed, it will not get re-used for our baby....we will just convert the cot.
If you recommed a single bed, where should I buy one from? Some I have looked at are up to $700!!!!

toys r us have great single beds that are low to the ground with short side rails, almost like a toddy bed but fit a single mattress theyre about $180 from memory but u can get them on special for about $120, try ebay even,

We got the Mammut (sp?) bed from IKEA for DS. He loves it. Plus, he has rolled out of it a few times, but usually just crawls out onto the floor without waking up ... lol
We got this cos we didnt want to get a full sized single bed when he was still so restless in bed - he's such a restless sleeper
And hell- they're damn cute!!
mmmmmm i see toddler beds as a waste, but thats probably cos we went straight to a singel bed with bed rails. only one transition that way, its personal choice really!
Yeah, single bed here too with rails. I couldn't justify getting a toddler bed. I just made sure that the kids could climb up and down safely.
We got bunk beds which separate into two singles, they're solid wood slat beds and I think the bunks cost about $800 and then we paid about $270 for each mattress.
I think you can get fairly cheap beds. If you just want a very simple bed they're not too expensive. But it's a one off purchase really. If you get a toddler bed now, you still have to fork out for a single one day anyway.
I forgot to mention that DS's room is really small, so size is a bit of a factor in not crowding him as well....
I second that and much cheaper in the long run. A mate of mine bought a single bed with a trundle underneath for when her son is old enough to have friends sleepover...years away but just thought I would pop that part in!:

Another factor is how long your little guy is. At 16 months Darcy was nearly too long for the cot, so we went straight to a regularbed as a toddler bed only used the same length matress. She's never had a bed rail eiether. I figured a decent ensemble should last until she's about 10 anyway....
Straight to a single bed and only used a bed rail for 2 months. Toddler beds are a waste of money to me. I preferred to go for a single bed simply because only one transition, i paid alot more then i wanted to (close to $1000) but for a bed that will last a long time and wasnt a cheap piece of bedding.

DD has a toddler bed but she is small and could not get in and out of a big bed by herself. It was $120 from memory and will be used for this bub as our cot doesn't convert. I really like the toddler bed as it is close to the floor (DD has fallen out a couple of times) and and just the right size for DD. We used the cot mattress so didn't need to buy a new one.
We went straight to a normal size bed with bed rail. The main reason was so that we only had to buy a bed once, not buy one and then another one. It worked well for us.
We went straight to a single bed (a tall girl). We got it from fantastic furniture but we will replace the mattress at 12 months with a better quality one.

My DD went into a single trubdle bed (so it was about her head height - but she uses a little dora step to get on and off). She went into it at about 18 months old. But it sat in her room from about 13 months so she got used to seeing , sitting and laying on it (although she wouldnt sleep in in until about 6 weeks ago).
She is fine in it. fell out a few times as she still moves around in it lots like it is a cot with 4 walls (it is against a wall and has a barrier the other side ) but she manages to fall off the foot end lol... talented girl.
Our cot does convert to a toddler bed and will use it for when DS is ready until he goes to a big bed. But didnt feel the need to have a toddler bed for a few months until she was ready for a big bed.
OUr mattress is a proper mattress for adult weight and cost us about $600 - anti allegernic . But it will last her into her teens (5 year warranty too) from snooze i think. We looked at cheap 200 ones but they were very foamy and would only support a toddlers weight so would need to look at another one in a few years when she was too heavy for it so they dont get back problems. So money well spent.
The trundle bed i got off ebay for $100 - solid base with drawers under neath for storage (she thinks its fabt o hide things int hem) and a book shelf at the headrest to have her night teddy bear and book.
But i think it is an inidividual thing. If your cot doesnt convert to a toddler bed then perhaps it would be good to use a toddler bed - as i think the transition will be easier and they can get in and out well - also the good gap between your bubs - means the older on ewill be ready for the big bed when the little one goes to the toddler bed.
But if your cot converts for #2 later - then i would get a big bed and save some $$. Once you buy a second cot mattress, the toddler bed - that would be a good $300-400 you could have put towards a good single bed :)

We have settled on a regular single sized base and mattress ensemble with a built in trundle underneath for just over $700. It has a 10 yr warranty and the mattress will last until he hits his teens (approx). We chose this over a frame with headboard style bed, as once we added a trundle and the two mattresses, we were well over $1200.
We went to 5 different places, so I think (hope) we got a good look at what is available... we are purchasing from Snooze whom I thought might be one of the most expensive, but they weren't!
Now I just have to find the money!!!!!
