Iron cleaner ... what product to clean the metal base ??

:hello: Hello all,

I have a Sunbeam Ultura 90 resillum Iron (purchased only last Winter) which has a non-scratch gold coloured metal base which has some sticky bits on it where it must have melted something on a clothing item i had ironed :rolleyes:

It's not bad ... just doesn't make the iron glide as easy as it use to when ironing now :doh:

Any suggestions on what product to buy to clean the metal base ... and where to buy & approx$$ how much ??? ;)

Oh my 21 hits .. and no one has a suggestion .. augh my sweet iron needs some help :help: .. Pretttyyyy Pleassseee someone out there in BB land must have an idea :pray:

I use a scourer designed for non stick pans and water. My iron is not scratched ;)

Perhaps some tea tree oil on a cotton ball and wipe the base with that?

Anymore ideas ... :rolleyes:

PLEASE keep them coming as my iron is still waiting to be cleaned ;)

Most of the products at the supermarket (DH has tried a few on his iron) either clog the steam holes or do nothing. so they take even more work than a little bit of elbow grease (which really is not that much - trust me, I am lazy!!) and a tiny bit of heat with a damp scourer (the green or blue ones work best - No steel wool).

I turn on the iron, then grab my damp scourere and while the iron warms up I clean it. only takes 2 minutes, and if it gets too hot turn the iron off, and when it cools enough to touch but is still warm start scrubbing again.

One of those magic eraser thingys! They're little white blocks that you buy in the cleaning aisle of the supermarket. The packet will say that they can clean anything - and they just about do! They're very soft, and won't scratch anything.

I just read today that sprinkling some salt on the ironing board and moving the iron back and forward on the board cleans the plate. (I don't think you turn the iron on, it didn't say anything about it)

That sounds like a really good one.

I have used al foil before, my mum does that. Also have done the non scratch scour thing.

I bought a stick called: Vilene iron cleaner. You rub it on when the iron is hot and it stinks to high heaven and is kinda messy. I am not really sure if i am recommending it or not. I am just telling you and you can make up your own mind. The fumes smells pretty bad. I bought it from a textiles wholesaler in Sydney. I don't know if I did it right because it didn't work brilliantly. What a great wrap I've given it!
