Reaction to Immunisation.. is there anything i can do.

Mia had her 4 month needles yesterday morning and yesterday arvo i noticed she was abit hot. So i stripped her off (it wasnt hot here) and checked her temp.. 37.4, yeah a little up but nothing too majour. She was off her bottles, couldnt get her to have any. 7pm came and she was burning up but her mouth was chatterng like she was cold. So i checked it again.. 37.9, i gave her some nurofen and put her to bed. Slept till 10:30pm when i woke her up to try and get a bottle into her, which i did. She seemed alot better. But from 2am, every 20-30mins she was waking. I kept resettling her which was all good. By 5am, i was awake. i gave her a big cuddle and went and got her a bottle. Checked her temp again .... 38.5, more nurofen given and had 160mls in her bottle.

So my question is.. what do i do? can i be doing more for her? when do i take her to the hospital re: temp?

TBH I think thats pretty normal, well we had the same thing with Jazz. Temps for about 12-24 hours afterwards, and then she slept HEAPS after her 4 month needles (no such luck at 6 months :doh:). So I would say its pretty normal. They say though that if you can't bring it down wiht panadol (be careful with neurofen, I know what it does to me so it may be making her feel a little worse?) then you should contact a dr.

Just make sure she is having her normal wet nappies (quantity etc) because it can dehydrate them especially if she is off her bottles too. I think thats another 'contact a dr' sign, dehydration. Bugger about it being a Sunday (we try to get Jazzy's done on a Monday just in case of a reaction etc) might have to ring the health line or hospital and see what they say maybe?

Hollye - agree if temp doesnt come down with whatever you give her - i would keep an eye on it and it her temp got over 38.5 i would be taking her somehow.

Has it gone down an hour after you give it to her? If so this is good.

You can rollover nurofen and panadol - 3 hours between each - but i would be hesitant to do it in a 4 month old - haven't done it with my kids until they were nearly 2 with persistant ear infections etc.

She doesnt sound dehydrated if she still took 160ml bottle.

Zander didnt sleep after 4 month needles, but slept alot after 2 months - so all kids react differently.

Cool damp flannel for wiping down the skin, offer fluids, all that type of thing.

well i put her back down about 7:45 and after 2 wake ups (you know them whingy, oh help me mum ones) and shes still asleep. SO I'm letting her go, ill let you know whats shes like when she wakes up. When she did get up this morning she was still smiles, so she cant be feeling that bad right?

One way to help bring down her temp is to put her in a warm bath (not hot and definitely NOT cold) and about a cup of white vinegar (NOT brown). It's an old wives tale but it works really well or did for my two. My grandmother said it draws the excessive heat out of the body. Sounds weird to me but it did work.

You are doing everything that you should do. Try not to worry it is quite common for kids to react this way after their needles. I’m sure that she will be back to her normal self by this evening or perhaps tomorrow

I think shes just had a 'typical' reaction. If she's still fevering by tomorrow morning I would go see someone. Jazz has had 3 lots (2,4,6) and I still stress and worry when her temp goes up or her injection sites are red and sore!!! Even though its normal, its natural for us to go into panic mode xxxxx she'll be fine, keep doing what you're doing and trust your instincts, if you think something isn't right, then see a dr :hug: :hug:

well Mia is up and i checked her temp and it has gone back down to 36.2 (which is her norm). Ill keep an eye on her.. thanks everyone. U all helped me from going crazy. xoxo
