bedsharing and breastfeeding mums - what kind of nappy do you use for night times?

Hi there,

What do bedsharing and breastfeeding (ie. nursing during the night without the baby waking fully, therefore no nappy changing) mums use on their bubbas at night?

I assume that since fluid is going in, more of it is coming out at night times than for other bubbas. Do you necessarily need to use a dedicated night nappy for the extra pee? Or is something like a boosted BBH bamboo fitted + wool cover enough?

I know I've just got to try things and see what works, but don't want to try BBH if there's not much chance, IYKWIM! Would you recommend just going straight for a night nappy? DD normally fills a disposable - ie. it's heavy with pee - but doesn't normally leak (sometimes, but it's the exception rather than the rule).

Umm.. in the early days, I would use a good nappy on DD that I knew would get her through to the next feed.

Now when she feeds at 10pm we put a BBB on her with a wool cover and it *just* does her (she was a bit damp this morning - so she may be needing to go some more boosting!)

DS is in a dedicated night nappy. I think you only really need a night nappy if you aren't planning on changing them - and you won't really know how much boosting you need until you give some things a go. Tis all just trial and error!!

I should have added my DD is almost 11 months, and no, I don't change her during the night as she doesn't wake fully, she kind of stirs and then sucks for a bit and then back off to sleep. I haven't gotten up in the night to feed her since she was 8 weeks - when it got too cold for me to get up! - I have just fed her lying in bed since then.

Anyway, tonight I'm hoping to trial her in BBH bamboo + bamboo overnight booster + wool cover... last time I attempted this she pooed just before bed and, as I had only one bamboo nappy at that stage (last week), had to wash it and wait for it to dry before we can (hopefully) try again tonight!!

haha yeah unfortunately what works for someone may not work for you - worst part of night nappies!!

If it helps at all I use green kids for DS of a night time, and good night sleep tight by bubblebubs and snoozywuns. They are the most successful ones here.

It depends on the baby.

When Ash was first born, a BBB with longies was enough, as he got a little older (about the 3 month mark) I needed to boost it with another booster. Now he has night nappies (sandman and mirabai and zada) which he usually wets a decent amount (wet to touch, not sopping wet). Sometimes I go back to the trusty boosted BBB but usually now I will use a pul cover incase.

It really depends how much they pee.... The sandman ones were good, but now really need extra boosting. We have a wild child night nappy that is great (though huge)

i use Keester Kovers... they have been the best NN i have used !! its an AI2, ive never had wicking or compression leak with either of the kids when they sleep next to me !
i used to use a fitted / wool cover .. but i am really lazy and got over that phase pretty quickly :lol:

Boosted BBH and fleece cover always worked for us.

Haha, and there I was almost crying because I had spent all that time pre-washing the nappy for first use and waiting for it to dry and lanolising the wool cover and DD goes and does... a POO!! DH didn't get what I was so upset about, but glad you guys do! :-)

I was onto it tonight - put her in a flat after her bath, figuring a poo COULD be coming seeing as there wasn't much action in that area today... was on the money, she did it, and then straight in the BBH all ready for bed. ;-)

BBHB here. Haven't needed to boost it for DD, but DS needed boosting. Depends how wet they are at night. I use whatever cover I lay my hands on.

My best friend swears by the new Mandy Mac Purple nights and a Disana wool cover. I am just about to embark on this all again so I think I will probably do a similar thing, maybe a BBH bamboo in the earlier days when bub is waking more often.

:sick: esp when there is a 5mth old already in the bed then my 10 tonne 2yr climbs in .. its wee stank central in the bed then !!! and can probably gaurntee the cats peed in the room somewhere too :lol:

I tried DD in it last night. It was great - no leaks. :-) BUT: should the wool cover be wet / damp on the inside when you take it off? I am thinking she might need more boosting, since the crotch area of the wool cover was moist when I took it off in the morning. How do you know if they have enough boosting, or need more?

Sorry, I'm new to cloth and want to make sure I'm doing the right thing!!

thats fine if the wool cover is damp, its a good sign that the cover is drawing moisture away from the baby , wool may be wet to touch , kinda like condensation . so no need to worry . but if its really leaking everywhere , try lanolising :) hth

I love the BBH one size fits all in bamboo and use a booster. I tend to use a PUL cover rather than wool though because DD soaks through the wool covers (yes I have lanolised it thoroughly and she STILL leaks through). I love the motherease PUL cover...nothing's gonna get through that cover!!!

i don't know the age of your child. Younger bubs tend to wee tiny amounts, but often (due to the size of their bladder). Older bubs wee less often but larger amounts.

When my child slept in my bed, i kept the nappy change mat, wetbag, wipes and a night nappy NEXT to the bed, in arm's reach. So i could change her (dream change) very easily, in low light, without leaving the bed (if a change was needed).

when she was a nb, i used malden mills pocket nappies with bamboo trifolds inserted. (bits for bots make these fleece pockets).

when she was about four months old, she needed dedicated night nappies, and i started using Kester Kovers AIO, fitted night nappies with handknit woolly covers or MM fleece covers e.g bear bottoms pullup covers (machine washable, dry fast, no snaps or aplix to bother about in middle of night).

we never had to change the bed linen due to leaks, so i am sold on night nappies.

when she was a newborn, i put a Swaddlebees Mattress Protector, on top of the quilt (if cold), on top of sheet (if hot) for her to lie on, and us to breastfeed in bed, on. The mattress protector was great for catching MY leaking milk, and the one time she projectile vomitted in bed. but we didn't have night nappy leaks.

dunno if any of that is of use to you, but that's what we did.

the baby beehinds fitted nappies are day nappies, and we used them in the day. she weed thru them in two hours easily, even as a tiny bub.
