Blankets vs sleeping bag
I am planning to use sleeping bags instead of blankets for my bub due in July. Do you think this should be enough? I was thinking of buying lots of fitted sheets and maybe 2 sleeping bags and a few swaddle wraps for the first few weeks. What do you think? My GF is appalled that I'm not buying any "cute" cot quilt sets etc! Does anyone else feel the same way? What worked for you?

can't really comment on the sleeping bags as haven't looked into them much, but with regards to cute quilt sets the SIDS recommendations are only sheets and blankets anyway, no quilts, no bumpers, no pillows, so buying a quilt set for a newborn would be a waste of money :)

i am doing exactly what you are doing and agree with mrs c about sids risk with quilt sets.

we never used a quilt due to SIDS. We wrapped both our babies until 4 months then used sleeping bags. Does your GF have a baby? Quilts are nice for decoration, they are actually really useful for the baby to lie on and play with toys if you receive any?

I have never used fancy quilt sets and I love sleeping bags. When your bub is newborn it will probably like to be swaddled so I would get some good wraps to start. I usually put my bub in sleeping bags from 3 months.
Only problem with using sleeping bags is both my bubs got used to having them and hated it when I put blankets on them. But on the flip side they are safer and you don't have to worry about blankets creeping up over their heads.

Thanks girls - I thought SIDS foundation is against quilts as well.
Belle - my GF has a 2yr old and another due in 2 weeks :o She won't hear my SIDS argument. :dunno:
Off to order my sleeping bag and swaddle ;)

We bought a nice quilt set as bubs will be in a bassinette in our room to start with, and I wanted the cot to look pretty!!!!!! But we are going to be using wraps and sleeping bags for bubs to sleep in because of the sids risk with the cot quilts...... Kinda like the soft toys I have in the cot, wont be in there when bubs is sleeping in there, but looks soooo pretty!!!!!

You will probably want some wraps or light blankets to use as wraps at first. My son went into sleeping bags at I think 2 weeks but before that we just wrapped him in blankets. He kicked everything off. Now that it's warmer I've taken him out of the sleeping bags & just throw a blanket on him so he can toss it off if he gets too warm, but when the colder weather comes the sleeping bags will come back out.
