Laparoscopy Q's???
I'm having another Lap done on Wednesday and was just wondering if they make the incisions in the same place as my last lap (i had my first lap done Nov last year)... I only had 2 incisions last time which my new FS thought that was abit odd
If they put the incisions in the same place does that make healing harder and more painful?
Also i have heard alot of people have shoulder pain..... i got "lucky" last time (not sure if it was lucky as obviously something went wrong with my last lap) i never got the shoulder pain.... so in prep for this one i was just wondering how everyone handled the shoulder pain??? (i heard it was worse then the stomach pain.... which is worrying me cause that hurt ALOT)
Anyway im just quietly freaking out now so im hoping someone can help
Thanks in advance

Hi Nikki,
In my second lap they made the cut in a different place and angle in my belly button but It was a different doctor so maybe thats why? my cut just above the pubic area had disappeared so not sure if it was the same place and then I had an extra cut on my left side of abdomen too! I think the cuts depend on where they find stuff and what they need to do! I've heard of people having 5 cuts!
All the best.

The shoulder pain I found controlled fine with neurofen/panadol, it wasn't too bad. I found the stomach pain worse it was stabby, the shoulder pain was just achey.
-
In regards to the shoulder pain, I only found it to be a problem when I was lying on my side (i.e. if I was lying on my left side I would get shoulder pain on my right side). I also found it manageable with painkillers and if I was lying in the right position.
I didn't find it to be worse than the stomach pain/cramps. It only happened in short bursts and it DID take my breath away when it happened but it would only last for a few moments. It can be uncomfortable but I think the cramps were WAY worse.
Hope that helps hun. Good luck

Thanks for that girls :).... I know everything will be fine and i really dont know why im freaking out about it
5 cuts :| gosh thats gotta hurt... there might be a chance the FS needs to take my tubes..... i wonder how many ill have.... guess only time will tell
I'm glad to hear the shoulder pain wasnt to bad.... So many stories i have read saying it is horrid (which im sure it is for some)
ETA: Amy - thanks for that hun... i was given panadeine forte (i think thats what it was called) from the hospital (3 day supply) and it seemed to do nothing at all.... I'm really glad to hear the shoulder pain isnt how i imagined it... i kept thinking geeze if its worse then the stomach pain what the heck am i in for :(

I had suspected endo on my left ovary so I had an extra incision on the left side of my abdomen as well as the cuts in my belly button and pubic area.
Can you ask your doctor these questions just prior to the surgery?
-
Hopefully i'll get a chance too... my old GYNO didnt really say 2 words to me which should have made me wonder then
FS isnt really sure what he expects to find with my LAP on wednesday.... but he said he'll do whatever it takes and whatever he feels is necessary for us to have another baby (either naturally or IVF)... oh he also thinks i could have PCOS (i was boarderline from my u/s done early last year)... i really dont know much abt that.....

hi Nikki,
I have had two laps and never got any shoulder pain. the shoulder pain is apparently from the gas the put into your stomach.
my first lap (2004) was to remove polyps. the doctor said he would make two incisions . he actuallt made four as i had severe endo. they need to make as many as need for the poles and surgical instuments to go in, and then to romove the unwanted stuff!
i had another lap (2007) to remove an ovarian cyct. i had my current FS do this op and he used the same old incisions. they didnt take any longer to heal or hurt more.
i had massive pain from my first op, but the second one was a breeze. again it depends on what the remove.
good luck.
hope it goes well and you have minimal pain.

Thanks for that Michelle..... ooooh i hope the pain isnt as bad this time around like it was for you
Not long to go now..... We leave for sydney at like 4am tomorrow. :)

 Nikki. Will be thinking of you tomorrow and hoping for a decent outcome for you. Hang in there sweetie. Not long now till you get those answers. xoxo

Thanks so much Rufi  :)

Nikki, all the best for tomorrow sweety  I hope he fixes whatever it is that is stopping you from falling pregnant.
As for the shoulder pain, I had it and it was sore if I didn't move it for a while but once I got going it was ok. Like the others say, use panadol or nurofen if it bothers you heaps. It is achey and uncomfy but will pass in time (it took about 1-2 weeks for me). I also had gas in my tummy still so when I went from laying to sitting I could hear and feel all this gas moving all inside of me. I thought I had internal bleeding LOL because it sounded like liquid. But after a phone call to my obs/gyno he said it was normal and just the residual gas moving around. Apparently it's the gas that makes your shoulder sore as that is the point that it escapes at.
Anyway I have my fingers super tightly crossed for you :crossfingers:

Nikki - How did you get on. Hope you are doing OK. xoxo

Hey sorry i forgot to undate in here..... LAP went well..... i dont have blocked tubes (she actually said my tubes were perfect).. i do have ENDO tho and alot of it  i really dont know much about endo i have been trying to research abt it but its hard to find exactly what im after
I have no idea how 2 laps can come to 2 different conclusions... i mean the first was blocked tubes everything looks fine (HOW did he miss ENDO) and now this one lots of ENDO , tubes are fine :wall:
I have my post op appt with FS on thursday which i cant wait for as i dunno what will happen from here..... The doc who done the surgery said i will need to have extensive surgery to get rid of the ENDO (i dunno why they didnt take it out then and there) she said that they dont always do that before starting IVF so im confused... (i had only just basically woke up when she told me all this so i wasnt all with it lol)
anyway thats about all that i know..... Oh the pain from this LAP was nothing at all.... other then the cold i have im pretty much back to 100%
-
Nikki- How strange! I haven't had endo myself but I have heard that once getting rid of it you can fall naturally (it does/can come back though).... but I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. That's great though that your tubes are fine.
Let us know how your FS appointment goes and what they say. Hopefully this is the first step to you falling pregnant

Hi Nikki,
Glad your recovering well from your lap.
I have severe endo and had a major operation last July (a laparotomy) which took 5 hrs. Depending where the endo is, will depend how they can remove it. I had 3 different doctors work on me. I had a large cyst on my left ovary which had blocked my uretha which meant my left kidney wasnt working properly so had a urologist put a stent in it to open it, then I also had endo on my bowel so a bowel surgeon was involved. Luckily he only had to scrape my bowel and not do a re-section! And my gyno removed my ovary (and cyst) and cleaned my whole anatomy so I could then proceed to IVF.
It does seem strange that they didnt see it when you had your last one. I also had an emergency laparotomy in Feb last year in which they could see how severe it was, but since it was so extensive, they only chopped part of the cyst hoping it would fix itself, which of course it didnt!
I hope this gives you some more insight.
Have you been experiencing any pain especially after AF? That is how I found out about my endo which ended up with me in hospital.
Let us know how you go on Thursday and if you want any more info, just let me know.
Take care,
Tania

glad all went well.
i have suffered form endo for many years.
they took it out first time while i had my first lap. i am now only lap number 5.
it will just keep growing and sometimes if it looks stable adn not to be spreading they will leave it and trial ivf beofre they go in and remove it.
as when you disturb it it can spread if it is not all missed as it get "angry" as i call it and spreads further.
leaving it is prob teh best option for now and if you dont fall in say 12 months they will prob remove it and then try again
i found i feel when i had bad endo and now its gone im having trouble, go figure..

WOW thanks girls for all the info.... there is really so much to take in tho im sure ill have a better idea of whats happening after my FS appt on thursday
Tania - whoa a 5 hour op... the only thing i remember the Doc saying was that the endo was on my bowel... attaching my ovary's to it... She did say she was able to realease one ovary tho..... so im not really sure what any of this means
I guess i do have abit of pain... its been alot worse then usual for the past few months
I just noticed you got your BFP... Congratulations :confetti:
Kellz - thanks for the info hun... i never really realised how bad endo could be... i do remember my doc saying that they dont always remove it before starting IVF but my FS will decide that
Thanks again ladies..... ill come in here and update on thursday after my FS appt
