Is this normal after getting vaccinations?

Hi,

My DD just had her 2mth needles on Monday and since then has been sleeping a bit more and fussy when feeding which I was told can happen..... but when she feeds and only feeds for a bit, she then vomits up some..... she then seems hungry soon after so I'll offer her more (I'm breastfeeding btw) and she'll take it then vomit up a little bit more. So i'm worried she's not feeding enough!!

Any ideas? Is this normal after their needles for this to occur? When will things settle down again for her? She only gained 135g last week so I'm hoping she can gain a bit more this week but it's hard when she won't eat much lately :(

Hmmm...I don't know Renee. DS1 would always be really unsettled for about 12 hours after his needles, but would be fine afterwards. DS2 didn't react at all. It's possible it is the needles, I just haven't had any experience with bubs that do that myself. Could you contact your MCHN to ask if it sounds normal?

Thanks Trish. :hug: It was only yesterday that we saw a MCHN too and I forgot to ask!! :doh: although she did say it's normal for them to be sleeping more and off their feeds but I didn't mention the little spews she has.

Ren one of the mums in my mother's group noticed a similar thing with her DD, after the 8wk injections she became quite unsettled during feeding. Could just be the way Ava is dealing with it?

But definitely call someone - maybe the MCHN line.

Zach had his needles on Tuesday and he hasnt been drinking much of his bottles yesterday, but today he is back to his normal feeding patterns...but refusing sleep, where as yesterday he slept ALL day and when he wasnt asleep he was crying or screaming

DD was vomiting quite a lot after her 2 month jabs, directly after feeding. She has always been a sicky babe anyway (reflux for a while), but this was even more. She had a mild fever for about 24-36 hours also. She also slept quite a bit more during the day after her 3 month jabs. It all went back to "normal" after about 3 or 4 days in both situations, so hopefully you'll see a change soon. If not, definitely get in touch with your MCHN, just to relieve your anxiety about it if nothing else hun.

She could also be comfort feeding if she's feeling unsettled and a bit off after the injections. She may have had enough to eat but wants to suck regularly for comfort, and when she gets more milk than she needs she's bringing it back up. DD does this also, and it's another reason for her being a chucky babe. If Ava's nappies are still as wet as normal and poos are still the same I would worry too much about whether she's getting enough. Try not to stress about her weight gain too, hun. Many BF babies plateau a little bit at 2-3 months in their weight gain. DD has too. As long as she is alert and happy (vaccinations aside) then you're doing everything brilliantly.

I might also mention that DD started to posset/spew more when she was 8-10 weeks old. I found this was in conjunction with her being able to take her feeds more effectively and quickly and thus getting a big quantity of milk really fast. It took time for her tummy to adjust to this, and it's still something that still affects her at 14 weeks, especially in the morning feeds when my BBs are really full and she gets the milk really quickly. Could this be a possibility for Ava too?

Try not to worry too much, hun. Things change so often and so fast at this age (so it seems to me) that it feels like a big guessing game so much of the time. Just remember that if she's alert when awake and generally happy, you're doing everything right.

Ren, BJ was similar after his 2mth shots. He spewed for about a week. Though he wasn't sleepy (unfortunately). I figured it was the oral stuff they give them that gives them a bit of a bug to get the immunity. He was really projectiling alot. I'm sure it'll settle down in a few days. I definately wouldn't be too concerned.

DD seems to be much better now the last 12hrs she's not vomited after her feeds and seems to be more herself. She's sleeping a bit better too but that's also cos' I'm learning her tired cue's better and actually putting her down before she gets overtired!! :lol:
So everything seems back on track. Just didn't want her to keep vomiting little bits all the time as then she'll be hungry!
Miss C - thanks for your reply, very helpful. Yes I think DD has been taking milk more effectively and she feeds for less time now too and seems full so I think that's also what it could be. I was so used to her feeds taking up to 1hr at a time before whereas now she seems to feed in 20-30mins and be full. It's great!!
And yep, plenty of wet and dirty nappies so that puts my mind at ease about what you said re: they reach a plateau. Plus I think my DD just isn't a huge girl... she's petite ;) hehe
