Thrush :(
This is just hideous! Is this the downside to having increased libido? I HAVE had increased wetness, due to arousal lately, so it might be related, dammit!!
Anyway, I'm on Nilstat oral capsules, as well as drinking Yakult, using Canesten topically (sometimes Hydrazole because of the inflammation), lathering in purified lanolin for the broken skin (esp useful when showering or using the loo). I've also just started to put some drops of lavender and chamomile on panty liners today, to see if that will help at all. I hate using disposable liners, but I don't have enough cloth ones to do the changes I need to do during the day.
Anyone got any suggestions that have worked for them, mainly to reduce itching and inflammation??? Pleeeeeeease??

i think deb (flowerchild) has a remedy that involves garlic, maybe pm her

What about Canestan internally? Or are you looking for a more natural control of symptoms? Not much help but I do sympathise. I think it is a result of the hormonal changes as I get it worse when I have progesterone injections but my FS said that Canesten internally was ok during preg.
-
A week on I still have it and it's hideous!!! I went to the GP today and asked for a pessary instead of the oral tabs, so gonna have shower now and hop into bed for some intimate time with an applicator...it's gonna be worth it...
I was thinking more remedies to accompany the tabs, but as the tabs weren't doing anything, I've decided it was time for a more aggressive approach! Pity it's gonna need fixing over our Easter getaway :( Oh, well, better being treated than letting it go on in this hideous fashion!

I know exactly what you are going through. While I lived abroad I got the worst thrush of my entire life....and I had it for 8 months. None of the medications available in that country worked for me and I couldn't possibly eat any more yoghurt.
Then, I got rid of it overnight. It wasn't pleasant. And you may need to brace yourself for what you are about to read.
Yukult. Soaked. Tampon.
It swells to the shape of the little bottle :) It's messy and unpleasant and something you will be glad to finish doing - but I did a series of them for about 24 hours - leaving each in place for about an hour and then changing.....fixed the problem straight away. You will need a pack of maternity pads also....trust me.
Nowdays and in this country, there is also Inner Health Plus but am not sure about it when preggers.

You can also do the yakult tampon with natural live yogurt too, or stick acidophilus capsules (you can get them in healt stores, they dissolve with body heat, you're supposed to swallow them but they'e safe to do this with too) up there twice a day. You basically want to use the good bacteria to nuke the candida.
FWIW it's not because of the sex (though you would be wise to have DP treat himself too - yogurt or yakult or canasten cream on the glans - since it can be passed back and forth between you) it's because the PH balance in the vagina changes, there are more sugars available in your body fluids (from blood to sweat and everything in between) and that gives the thrush plenty to eat. Cutting down on refined sugars can help if you're having a lot of it, but i doubt you are.
And honey how long have i been away? How on EARTH did you get to be 20 weeks pregnant so suddenly!?

Yeah, I meant to mention that, the discharge your body produces during sex actually helps to cure thrush :)
-
helps to cure it, huh? And if I can bring myself to orgasm, same thing?
I was clear for ages but I think I have it again...not sure, but the discharge has changed from clear to cloudy/yellowy again, doh! Might try to acidophilous capsules, as I have them at home and need to get more anyway. I like the idea of 'nuking' the area!
Bec - I sat on the news for a while and 20 weeks has sort of snuck up on me, too!
-
Yeah self help is probably better than other help :) If the discharge is cloudy though, you might want to see a doctor just in case (doesn't that sound like fun?) the yeast infection is being caused by another infection...especially if it has come back after a month or two.
-
well, today it began to be itchy so I'm seeing a doctor...again :( Bugger!
Definitely cloudy with white bits in it. Not good, huh? Will dose up on the acidophilous this morning, though, and I have some more coming in the post (online chemist).
Last time it turns out I had a Strep B infection at the same time, so I hope it hasn't come back because the later it gets, the less I'll be able for antibiotics...
Thanks for your help, girls!

Been to doc, results from swab not back but he reckoned it was thrush and I'm dosing up on Canesten internally, as well as using the acidoph. tablet in the morning.
Now, not sure if it was just coincidence, but the last time I treated for it, I'm pretty sure the same thing happened - I have noticed a smell coming from the skin on my hands. It's almost garlicky but I haven't had garlic for some days now! Is it related? Or is it to do with too much onion in my food?? I know that's a strange question, but it's even stranger to smell my hands, especially at night and the morning when it's strongest!
Hoping anyone can help me with that one...
So, the doc reckons to treat this bout of thrush with Canesten for 3 weeks...geez, that's a lot of liners. Thinking I might go the week (6 day treatment) and just do the acidoph. tabs from then on, twice a day.
Ugh, I hate this, but at least this time it's not ravaging me like the time I originally posted!

It's probably related Mayaness. When your system is overloaded you can usually detect it in other ways - especially when PG and with a highly sensitive sense of smell. Can you stomach garlic? It is actually helpful for thrush - i know women who treat thrush and various kinds of BV (bacterial vaginosis) with garlic. You can eat it (a small, whole clove, raw and peeled like a big tablet twice a day, or 2-3 roasted cloves mashed up (easier to stomach/get in) twice a day, or garlic tablets (you need more though) or even as a pessary (thread cotton through a peeled clove (don't cut it, even to remove the bottom!) and push it into your vagina, remove after 20mins, repeat twice a day)). I know 3 women who managed to make sure their StrepB status was -ve for birth using garlic regimes.

I've done the garlic once before, I can't remember when or what happened. In fact, it might have been last December (when I ovulated for the first time in over 3 years!), cos the memory isn't too old. The thread might have been too thin because it cut through the clove and I had to fish it out! I like garlic, just forgot to cook with it last night. Might make sure I get a good dose very shortly.
I'm pretty sure the smell is linked.
Your new username threw me, Bec!

sorry I havent read all the replys so might be just repeating here Maya...
have you tried natural yogurt this can help you have to eat and insert it...
Plus somewhere in the never reagens of my brian I think I can recall hearing that Men can carry thrush so DP could also be reinecting you each time you DTD... maybe he should be checked or at least use some protection until your all cleared up...
Hope you feel better soon ...
I cant believe you are already 20 weeks feels just like yesterday you told us... Gee this year is flying by...

Hi Mayaness,
I get thrush a lot normally let alone when I'm pregnant. I changed from using soap to using a sorbolene wash and it made a HUGE difference. Anything with soap in it or fragrance sets me off. Hope that helps. It's awwwful. Hugs to you :-s

If you have a bath, try adding 1/2 cup vinegar and 2-3 drops tea tree oil.

i used to suffer thrush very badly, especially in the warmed months. mainly cause of sweat and all the beer i was drinking lol.
however i used to find the 6 day canisten treatment works great.
comes with a cream and 6 seringes, and u insert it in the vagina. Suprisingly it really gets it up there lol. The cream wouldnt come out for like 20 hours.
You just gotta make sure ur partner is treating himself also, as that was my main problem to begin with. I was having intercourse with him, and treating myself, thinking that would be enough, however he must have had it also, as i managed to get it again only a week later.
Its so terrible hey, especially when ur in a shop or something, and all you wanna do is SCRATCH :)

so far, fingers crossed, i havent had it during my pregnancy, i couldnt imagine how bad it would be having it when giving birth vaginally.....the burning from thrush is bad enough, let alone on top of giving birth :/
