Baby with a blocked nose
My 7 week old DS sounds like he has a bit of a blocked nose. He can still breath, but it doesn't sound clear if that makes sense. I don't know if it's bothering him, but it's bothering me as I'm worried he might not be able to breath properly. Is there a way I can 'blow' his nose or something to clear it?

Bubs will breath through his mouth if he cant breath through his nose. It will make feeding a pain cause he will stop and start while he takes a breath. Otherwise you can make up a saline solution and put a drop in each nostril.

Babies first colds are always scary for any new mum's. I still hate it when my 10 month old gets sick. Blocked noses are very common and if it is bothering your bub, you can buy a natural saline product called FESS in all chemists. It is a saline spray/drops which you squirt into the nose and then shortly after, you use the aspirator (provided in the box) and suck out any loose snot (sorry, sounds gross). Because it is saline, you can use it as much as you like as it is gentle on little noses. We have gone through one box and I have my next one in the cupboard with winter on it's way. Good luck and remember, colds don't last forever. :-)

we used a vaporiser at night and 'fess little noses' or little fess, but not sure if that one is ok for under 2 months - the chemist would know though.

yep, we used the FESS little noses & the so affectionatley named 'booger sucker' (LOL i apologise, but thats how we referred to it!)
it does work well! i remember being stumpedas to how you get a baby to clear their noses!!

Thanks so much for your replies! :) I will have a look for that Fess stuff.

Because babies can't blow their nose, it stuffs up. Thats why they sneeze a lot too, to get it out. The reason for the snorting is because babies cannot breathe through their mouthes until some months after birth. So it sounds like they are struggling to get air in but theyre not really. Fess does work wonders.

sterla - I use 'Flo Baby' saline solution for Kye - you can get it at most chemists, its about $8-9 off memory. Its a pump spray, very easy to use!

also pop him in the bathroom when you or DH have a shower - the steam will soften anything in his nose and help it run. Just put him elevated so it runs out the nose and not into the tummy.
Some tummy time will also help drain it out of the nose if he is having tummy time.
We always found elevating the head of DD's bed helped too.
