Reflux Formula

Hi all,

Just after some comments from those that have or are using any of those Formula's specifically made for reflux suffering babies.

My little one is only 3 and a bit months old and pukes constantly all day long, even 4 hours after his last feed! We had him on Losec but i stopped giving it to him to see if it made a difference. He's still vomiting just as much, maybe even worse. He doesn't seem to suffer any pain now so i don't see any point putting him back on the Losec as i have heard it only reduces the acidic burning feeling (causing pain) and that it doesn't actually reduce the vomiting at all. Anyone disagree with this?

Anyway, let me know your experiences with the Reflux Formula.

Losec DOES NOT help vommiting AT ALL! Its an anti-acid so it helps with the pain from the vommiting. Its prob best to keep him on the one brand and s26 does have a reflux formula. Its thicker so it is meant to stay down. Its in an orange tin.

Personally NOTHING helped with DD's reflux and i have tried everything. Tho i have recently found out that its more an internal problem than reflux itself. As for the formula's the AR ones just made her spew thicker. But i have known people who have had great success with it.

While it IS true that omeprazole (Losec) (and ranitidine/Zantac as well) are antacids, they can sometimes have an affect on the vomiting because by reducing the acid damage to the oesophagus and the oesophageal sphincter, they make the baby less prone to vomiting.

I have seen people who swear by anti-refluz formulas, and others who believe they made no difference. Some informal studies in parenting magazines have found they don't work either. If your bub is already on formula, then I don't think trialling a tin of AR formula would hurt. Consider changing brands as well, in particular to one that does a goat's milk based formula - goat's milk is much closer in composition to human milk than cow's milk is, and there is some thought that it might be easier to digest.

ive just tried Losec yesterday and we have been on novalac reflux formula,,is there another brand by s26 or sumthin s im finding novalac making my son poo around 5 times a day,,and hes very windy and strains when he does,not constipated but breaks wind b4 he poos and strains and poos pretty much each time hes eating,,,nevr happned b4 we went on the AR formula....the paed checked him and said he not lactose intolerant as his bum would be red and and frothy squirty poos...

if you can help me with another brand of AR formula or sumthin to have with Losec,hes been on the infant gaviscon but have been given zantac by the doc and dunno what does to give him,hes about 5.5 kilos and 11 weeks old,i hear it works better than gaviscon..

Karicare does an AR formula. They also do a HA-AR formula, which I'd avoid. Sam would poo 10-12 times a day on it and they reeked... combine that with the constant farting and we were embarrassed to take him anywhere!

I belive S26 also does an AR formula.

Another option would be to add karicare thickener to another non-AR formula that you know suits your baby.

My son is on Karicare HA-AR and has been for months. It was the only formula that stopped his chucking. He chucked a little less on AR but not much. The first week or so he did poo more but by the second week his system was used to it & he just went once a day & completely stopped throwing up. Life is so much easier now - less washing to do, less spot cleaning the carpet & less changing of clothes for the both of us.

Both my kids have had reflux... My DS was only good on Karicare AR and my DD we had non stop issues with formula... We tried every brand HA,AR gold etc... We finally settled on karicare gold... When its made up it is quite thick for a normal formula... havent had any more issues... We tried S26 newborn, gold, AR, SMA (all of which made her constipated) , Heinz nurture (threw up whole feed) , karicare HA AR & KAricare AR (Constipation also), Nan AR, (1 and 2) (dioreah bad) Novalac- ( dioreah).....

I used Zantac for my DS as his GOreflux was bad but DD was more silent reflux... I used zantac til i was told about brauers. Their stomach calm and colic relief worked wonders for my DD... Once bubs gets more upright things usually settle down. Try sitting more upright, raising the bed, etc etc...

Also have u noticed any constipation with S26 Gold... I have heard its the worst for constipation... (made my DD need supositries)

My 4th bub was on the Kari care HA-ar Formula,this worked very well for him,& we didn`t need to have him on any ant-acids. I suppose all bubs are different,so what works for some,might not for other`s,but it was a blessinf for us,lol.

This is surely a hard one.....DS has been on novalac AR and now suffering constipation bad,we tried the karicare AR and he didnt like it,too thick and the start of constipation,i have bought a tin of s26AR but havent tried it as yet....he normally has heinz nurture 1 gold so im thinking of just giving him a normal bottle with the the Karicare food thickener,our paed also said to give him nan ha gold+ he had this at birth and make him constipated then...mmm dunno worth trying....is there any good non AR formulas that are quite thick apart from the nan ha pro gold,poor little thing,i have some brauers stomach calm,even though he 3 months old might have to give him some as hes so backed up and in pain,also gave him 40ml boiled cool water to help....
any advice apart from ringing the paed? he on losec and gav

Soniebon- Ittook me 3 months to get a formula that DD 's body could handle... I tried the popular S26 newborn, gold SMA all gave her constipation. so i tried heinz which made her throw up her whole feed. So i switched to karicare AR... was ok but started to constipate her after the 1st week of being on it. :wall: i then switched to Nan HA step 1 she had dioreah, tried step 2 worse dioreah. it went on like this for novalac ones also. were now on Karicare gold... Its very thick for a non AR formula... You can buy sachets so u can trial an not waste money on tins.

U can buy coloxyl drops for constipation or add some brown sugar to ur boiled water. riding a bike motion with his legs to ease the constipation

JD is now 4 months old and was officially diagnosed with reflux by the Peadi when he was just 4 weeks old. Although I am sure he suffered from it from birth. His first 6 weeks were hell and I think it attributed to my PND that I was later diagnosed with. We first tried 1mm of Mylanta after each feed. It wasn't that successful but after a while it did help a little. But the Zantac was great. Although it did not reduce his vomit, he at least was not in pain when it came up as it was before. He is still on Zantac but Peadi wants me to wean him off it in about 5 weeks. He went on S26AR (anti reflux) and although they can get a bit slower in the poo area it has made a huge difference. He still has a chuck every now and then, but now its just the normal amount. He loves his food so much that the 240ml of formula each feed has not been satisfying him. So with the go ahead of the Peadi, we began feeding him solids at 3.5 months. Just Farax and apple, pear, carrot and other vegies etc. He loves it. Eats about 10-12 spoons of Farex each feed mixed with fruit or vegie. He gets this 3 times a day an hour after his bottle so he is still getting his nutients that he needs from the formula. I get critisised for starting him so early, but as each adult is different then so are children. He is ready and he opens his mouth and swallows and has never gagged once. He is a much happier baby and a huge difference in his sleep and play time.

I just wanted to chime in here and say that losec is NOT an antacid. It works by stopping the production of acid in the first place, while antacids only neutralise acid. If your child is a puker, then he may or not need meds depending on the symptoms. I would be far more concerned about the damage of acid rising 100's of times a day, and the damage it can do to the esophageous and throat, then the vomit.

If he is happy with the vomitting, then he is likely not to need meds and he will get better in time, if he is crying and sreaming all the time, then he needs something to soothe the burning (ever had heartburn?)

I will suggest that the S26 is probably not a good formula for you, the fact that he is chucking up 4 hours later, means that he is having a hard time digesting it. You may be better off with a broken down formula, we used NanHA but I am sure there are more out there, they are either hyrdrolysed or hypoallergenic formulas. Basically the milk protein is more broken down and thus easier to digest, leaving to to pass quicker and less to reflux on and vomit out. Thickening can help too.

My little one has been through quite a few formula changes since being a full FF bub. Her reflux has been a big issue since 5weeks old. Tried Karicare HA AR which seemed ok at first, she didn't spit up as much but then after a week she started spitting up just as much but thicker and she had major issues with constipation and we tried coloxyl, lactulose and prune juice combined with no effect (all advised by pead):wall: Now we are back on NAN HA Gold 1 it's the only one that she doesn't have constipation issues with. I think it comes down to trying something and seeing what works for your baby every baby is different, the pead told me that the AR formula's are likely to constipate because of the thickness that is why we tried the HA AR because it has been broken down a bit more, therefore a bit thinner in consistency. Maybe try the HA AR Karicare formula maybe this will suit??:pray:
