Have a GP appt today RE PCOS & no AF!

I have booked an appt to see a GP today from Family planning, and I hope that I will get a better response than the last GP I saw at my Dr's (keep trying and come back in another 12months if you are not pregnant' I have PCOS and I get AF 3 times a year! I was so annoyed, it is like I just want someone to listen and understand what I am saying. I was also pi*sed off because when I asked for a referral to see the Fertility Specialists she told me NO because drugs are not the answer and I could have multiple pregnancies. Although we have only been trying for a little over 6 months, 3 AF a year means I only have 3 chances... that is IF I even ovulate!

Oh well... there is my little vent, I just hope I get some answers and help today!

Mitzy, good luck with the GP. I went to see my GP after having an Implanon removed from my arm after 6 years of use. Given my personal history (sorry don't want to post it all here) and the results of some tests that were conducted it was determined I had PCOS and I was given a referral to a Gynae for PCOS management. My GP put it to me as this "I think you will have trouble concieving on your own - so rather than wait 12 months I am referring you now for PCOS management". The Obs was a bit reluctant at first as we hadn't been trying long at all - well actually my cycle hadn't even returned from the Implanon which was one of my GPs greatest concerns.

Hopefully the GP gets where you are coming from and can at least get you into PCOS management with a Gynae.

ETA: I forgot to add that with the PCOS managment with the Gynae I was successful in falling pg so it can happen

i went to GP for lack of a cycle just before DH and I got married - some BT's, an u.s and within a week i had a referral to a gyne for PCOS management. i wasnt' referred direct to a FS and i appreciate that - we made every effort to manage the PCOS with minimal intervention first - when that wasn't working (i have super stubborn ovaries) i was sent to a FS - the turn around was about 6months from first gyne appt to first fs appt and in that time i had a lap to check ovaries, ovarian drilling (to make them more receptive to the meds) and three cycles of clomid (to which i didn't respond) as well as being on metformin

it is wrong of a doctor to dismiss you based on the 12 month theory when you have no cycle so to speak - PCOS is a medical condition and, whether TTC or not, you have a right to receive treatment to try to manage it.

I too suffer with PCOS, but I would be lucky to have any periods a year, if at all I was blessed wtih maybe 1 at the most.

Yes in my lifestyle I loved it but when the time came to falling preggo, mmmmm not such a good thing

I went to a lovely OB here in Shepparton who did all the tests blah blah blah and made sure that I was able to concieve

He then referred me to a fertility specialist in Melb. who was brilliant btw

He put my on ovulation induction, which comprises of drugs to get my system going and boy did it work, only after 2 cycles

Im currently 14 weeks preggo

Keep persisting u will get somewhere

I saw the GP and she was really lovely, she sort of said the same thing tk1999, 'You will have trouble, so best we send you to see a specialist'. I have an appt in about 3wks, I am scared about it all in a way, I really do hope whatever is decided works. Sounds like it will prob be clomid, but I guess I will wait and see. Fingers crossed.

Mitzy- I have always had a weird cycle and the DR's answers were go on the pill to regulate me... Which i tried but still i would skip periods. After a while of changing we found one that helped and i ended up falling preg with my DS on the pill... wasnt until 15 months after having him that we found out that it wasnt so easy to fall preg again... we tried for 6 months and nothing so i went to the GP and had an US and found out i had PCOS. By the time all this had happened my son was 2. they toldme diet and excercise to loose weight ( i am overweight and they said it was common for PCOS sufferes to carry extra weight round the middle) After another 6 months of that i went back to see what they could do. We did bloods and found out that i wasnt producing any progesterone so therefor my body wasnt releasing eggs. I had a short dose of some progesterone pills (to make me get AF) after the few days of taking them i had small amount of AF and then nothing (like 1 day) 7 we thought it hadnt worked and were supposed to go back in a months time.
Well i got sick and it lasted 2 weeks... throwing up couldnt keep anything down. went in did tests could find out why i was throwing up... get to hosy they check few things finally decide well check for pregnancy even though it wasnt likey and YEP i was... 7 weeks...

I think u need to find a food doctor OB to help u then get u refered onto a FS. Dont be affraid to get 2nd oppinions or advice. The GP who diagnosed me told me i would never have kids naturally and wouldnt have much hope with other methods... I spent weeks in tears and though nope i'll get a 2nd oppinion and thankfully we did

Congrats dressagequeen, and thanks for the support. It is so nice to hear stories like this. Heygoodlooking... sounds like you had a rough morning sickness time!
I am so glad I got a decent GP, it was the same for me when I went to the Dr years and years ago....oh we will put you on OCP, it was hiding the problem, not fixing any of it. I have done my best, quit smoking, lost about 20-25kg, a lot healthier so I hope all goes ok.

Mitzy, thankfully the GP didn't try the wait and see approach.

Mitzy, my cycles were all over the place and after 5 months I saw a gyn about irregular cycles and the face that it looked like i hadn't even ovulated. The Gyn was wonderful put me on clomid straight away! I call it my miracle drug, as I am currently 15 weeks pregnant. Don't take no for an answer, see another doc/specialist if they aren't helpful.
