1st AF after baby
Just wondering what everyone else's first AF after having a baby was like? Light or heavy, spotting only, painful etc?
I'm trying to figure out if I'm getting AF or not. Monday I noticed some odd CM/discharge but only on the TP, yesterday nothing, and a little spotting on and off today. Have been feeling a bit bloated as well... aargh I wish I knew what my body was doing LOL!

Angel,
With Olivia, exaxtly what you describe.....extra cm preceeding, bloated, but then a fairly normal AF.....but a bit heavier.
With Charlie I was on the mini-pill si I am never sure what was a proper AF or breakthrough bleeding, but either way, a lot lighter........
Not sure if that helps any........

Thanks Kate & Lucy :)
I'm still spotting... I wish AF would hurry up and get here!

I am having my first AF since my daughter was born nearly four months ago (AF arrived five days before she will be four months old). I am breastfeeding exclusively. I had been watching my CM and it indicated ovulation three separate times (once in january when she was five weeks old, and then twice in the next month and a half). Anyway, AF started on wednesday (15/3) but it is very slow flowing, I'd say about 1/3 the flow I usually had (if I remember correctly). The blood is very dark brown too, I think because it is slow and maybe progesterone is off from breastfeeding too. I had a short luteal phase (I think about 8 or 9 days), also probably from breastfeeding. Was anybody else's first period after baby like this? I have read so much about heavier than usual flow and cramps. I had horrible cramps on monday (two days before AF), enough to make me worry that something was wrong inside...I didn't think it was AF all ready since I had noticed ovulation less than a week before that. I was quite bloated as well, and my skin and hair are oilier than normal. I'm looking quite good as you can imagine :-({|= Bloated, broken out skin and hair that is at once oily and falling out. And to think that I was in some sick way looking forward to AF coming back :noaf: I guess it was just part of my desire to "get back on track" after the disruption of another baby

I recently had my first AF since having my second baby. It was really light, and I thought that was it. Then I had the bloating and a bit of pain and wham! a heavy period about two days later. I also had so much nausea that I was vomiting and really sick for the first two days. I hope it was gastro, because I don't think I could cope with that every month. I have heard of people vomiting when they get their period, but I thought it was from the pain. My pain wasn't that bad, so I'm hoping it was just a bug. I think after my first baby I had period pain on and off for ages before the first AF arrived.

Shannon sorry to hear it was so heavy! I was an emotional wreck too. I yelled at my husband before going to the supermarket, and then felt like crying while I was at the checkout, for no reason at all.
Good luck with TTC.

I have had 1 since birthing Indah & it was slightly heavier than my periods before.. I never have any pains, cramps etc... It just arrives quite light on day 1 & heavy on 2-3 & then spotting on 4 & pretty much gone by day 5...
This first one probably lasted a full 7 days!!! But wasnt painful or anything!!!

Okay, so recently I finally had my 1st AF and it was heavier & longer than usual (7 days bleeding + 2 spotting).
Shannon, here's hoping we're both PG again soon!!

I hate my first AF after all of the kids are born...it is really heavy and painful for me all the times lol
I am hoping i wont have to have too many more before we start TTc again either...Im going to get my Implanon out on Monday and going back on the pill for a couple of months to regulate things...
Lots of baby dust to you Angel (and Shannon!)

Oh joy ... I've had the moods and spotting this week (Alex is 6 months old) ... and chocolate craving ...

I just had my 1st AF since having Declan a couple of weeks ago and it was quite heavy for the first 4 days, but had no cramping or anything which was good.

Funny I should notice this thread. I am about to ring my obstetrician about some light bright red bleeding I've been having for the last couple of days. I thought the lochia had finished but this has just started up again. It was preceded by pain on the left side of my abdomen. I wondered if it might be a mild AF but surely it is too soon for that? I only gave birth seven weeks ago today.
I've been waiting patiently for AF because I'm planning on going back on Triphasil. Theoretically, this may help to keep my endo under control so that I don't have to have another laparoscopy before having those frozen embryos transferred next year.
Shannon, that period sounds like it came straight from hell. BTW (and off topic) HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESS!!

Melbo, i got my first af at about 8 weeks..so i dont think 7 w is too soon to get it.
My first one was bloody painful and so so heavy. TMI but i had blood all over my jeans 1 hour after having a shower and putting a tampon in!! It was worse bleeding than what i got after having bub- but then i had a c/section and they tell me the bleedings not as bad as it would have been if i had a normal birth.

I had a light bleed around 7-8 weeks after having Tallon, and I mentioned it to my OB when I saw him and he said its very common to have a bleed around 6 weeks, and then having nothing at all for ages. (I'm assuming he meant while breastfeeding?). But it was such a light bleed, and lasted a couple of days. My lochia took 6 weeks to go.. so I thought it might have been that too a couple of weeks later. *shrug*.
I've been getting loads of CM that indicates ovulating, so I'll soon find out I guess if AF is back for good. I was looking forward to no AF for at least 6 months (a year would be good!).

Hi again ladies,
Thanks all for your replies.
Well the flow tapered off (it remained light throughout). Then the pains started on my right side and bleeding began again. Once again, very light. I'm not taking it as a period. It is all too bloody confusing (excuse the bad pun). I think I will consult my doctor on this one.
Ivana - I too thought BF meant no periods for quite some time but judging by what I've read on here, there is a lot of variance in when and how AF returns. I'm not BF myself unfortunately so can't comment from a personal perspective. The CM sounds like the cycles are coming back though .. it really does.
Em - I had a c/sec too but your bleeding sounds like it was much heavier than mine. I used to get periods like that pre pg. I assumed this bleeding was so light as there has not been much time for any lining to accumulate as I've been bleeding ever since the birth, pretty much.
Oh these dang girly bits ... when does it all end? Okay, I know the answer to that one (sigh). =)
