I think my dog has a grass seed stuck in between her toe!

I have noticed that our dog has been licking in between her toe, I checked (about 1wk ago) and have continued to check, but nothing, and tonight I have noticed that she has a cyst/abscess come up, so I presume that she has a grass seed in it. I am going to have to take her to the vet obviously, she is still her normal crazy self, is this a case of get her to the vet 1st thing tomorrow or can it wait until Friday when I can get away from work to do it? It couldn't have come at a worse time, DP is away, and I work the worst/longest hours. Pets are like kids.... can't get sick at times to suit us!

If she's got an abscess then that can get infected and cause death, it isn't something to put off.

Having said that, if you feel comfortable to try to remove the thing from her foot, then that would give her relief sooner rather than later.

The thing with grass seeds (from memory, I'm not a vet or have had vet training!) is that they can travel and may require lancing to remove.

yeah thats what i am thinking too...its not oozing, its a hard lump but I imagine will get sore soon as the seed moves about. Everytime I try to have a good look at it she wriggles around and licks me and won't keep still and is basically stupid lol. I will call vet tomorrow and book her in.

Good idea calling the vet and booking in for tomorrow. Kazbah is right, once the grass seed is in there it can start traveling quite a bit sometimes. If you are lucky it'll be directly under the lump/abscess and they'll be able to lance it and get it out without much trouble. Sometimes it's a lot trickier than that if they have traveled a lot. We had a dog that had an entry wound between it's toes on a back foot, yet we couldn't find any grass seed in there even after we opened it up quite a bit under general anaesthetic. About a week later the dog came back because it now had a lump under it's shoulder! We lanced it out out popped the grass seed. It was amazing that it made it all the way from the back foot to the shoulder! At least we found it though.

I called the vet and she is booked for an appt tomorrow. I am sure she will be so thrilled. lol
