We have 'rescued' a dog which is about 8months???? - 1 year old????? and he is NOT housetrained. He does go outside (using the dog door) sometimes, but also goes on the floor and carpet ALOT!!!!
He is a beautiful dog (Bichon Frise x Poodle) but the mess is driving me crazy? How do I train an older dog?

You gotta be watching him to catch him. As soon as you see he's doing something, pick him up and put him outside where you want him to go. I guess he's still young enough to get the picture.
Yep hard to do with a DS who is 3 and one who is 10 weeks!!!
Yep I completely understand, but when you do see it and can do something then do! It's not like you can sit down and have a chat with a dog about how it's wrong to pee inside :) Good Luck
We just adopted a 1 year old mini daschound and she is struggling with the toilet training as well. I am taking her outside every hour or so and making her stay on the grass. If she does anything I give her lots of cuddles and pats and then bring her back in. We still have some problems and I was about to start a thread about the same thing. Lets see if we can swap ideas and try to get them trained at the same time!

I just remembered, a friend of mine who has a lot of dogs suggested taking them outside as soon as they have finihsed their dinner. Going to try that tonight or tomorrow night.
Ok, just saw a number of friends with dogs that they have trained when they were older. Their advice is:
Since they wont pee where they sleep if you put their basket where they have been going it should break the habit. They also suggested that you give the dog a blanky or towel (we're using a small pillow as she fits on it) and take that around the house with you and get your dog to sit on it. That way there are lots of associations with sleeping and sitting and less on the whole peeing business.
It worked for us last night but she still managed to do a poo inside, but that may have been cause she was desperate...
