probably exposed to "slap cheek"

hey everyone,
after visiting our family dr just yesterday he came to the conclusion dd probably has what they are calling "slap cheek" virus or i think its proper name is parvo virus b19 maybe?
im currently 27 weeks pregnant and the dr is very concerned as i currently have cold like symptoms which could suggest i have it.. ive been tested for my immunity but dont get the results back till tuesday. im so scared, most things i read say my odds are pretty good being this far along in the pregnancy but i just hate thinking there could be something wrong or that something could go wrong.. i just feel like im gonna disintergrate im so scared and i just keep bursting into tears. as horrible as it sounds im pretty worried about the fact that if something does go wrong that the virus came from dd.. i know it sounds awful but i really worry about how thats going to make me feel even tho logically i know its not her fault..
anyway sorry for the ramble just needed to get it out.. fingers crossed i will have been previously exposed and have immunity too it because thats the only way to be absolutely sure bubby wont catch it..

You're right, it's an agonising wait.

The problem with slapped cheek is that in the first trimester it can cause a condition called hydrops fetalis, which leads to miscarriage. At your stage of pregnancy, the doctor is right, you should be safe. But here's hoping your test results come back as immune anyway.

Erin had this when I was about 30wks pg with Paige and even though I took her to our Dr, I was never tested? He just told me what you said Michael, but I didn't realise there even was a test for immunity. In our case things were just fine, but I guess he didn't think it was enough of a concern?

Noni, at hospital yesterday they thought W might have slap cheek and when I told them I was pregnant there was an awkward pause, but then they asked how far along and said that it wouldn't cause a problem at this stage. Try to relax a bit about it. I think Rainy's L had slap cheek when she was preg, you could check with her what she was told.

im so confused.. why would the dr be testing me if this is the case? i thought there was still a risk of losing the baby or fetal anemia (sp?) or anemia for myself but im confused as to why u guys werent tested for it coz if there was a risk ud think u would be.. maybe my dr is over reacting? ughhh confusion!!!

I don't know why Noni, but I guess you're in the better of the two situations in that you've been tested, so either way you should find out if you have immunity or not kwim? I guess if anaemia is a risk then your Dr would know that you do have low-ish iron levels so maybe that's why he tested?

I tested positive for slap cheek during my second pregnancy. I didn't show any symptoms so never actually determined when I had it. The test came back positive at 22 weeks. The advice I received was that after 20 weeks there was no risk to the baby. During the first trimester the major risk is of miscarriage. Then until 20 weeks it is the hydrops you referred to - if this develops they give the baby blood transfusions in utero. This can be identified by ultrasound. Because they were unsure of when I had contracted the parvo virus (slap cheek) I was monitored for 8 weeks with fortnightly ultrasounds. Had I been past 20 weeks they wouldn't have done anything.

From my experience you have nothing to worry about - you are far enough.
