My DS is ALWAYS sick
Hi
I just need some ideas/advice as to why my 7yo DS is ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS sick. He is away from school at least one day every fortnight (but it's been 1 day per week for the last 2 weeks). He always has a cold, or is coughing to a point where he is throwing up. He has had a cough for the last month and the poor thing can't talk sometimes because of it. The coughing drives us nuts, but it must be really hard on him too.
The dr. tells us she can't do anything about the cough. Recommends cough mixture but they don't work. She gave him Flixotide inhalent, but that has no effect either.
He has always been sick (cold/cough, fluey) as a toddler but the sickliness is getting worse. He is missing out on heaps of school. We joke that, thank god he is a gifted kid, otherwise he would have stayed down in school due to the number of days he misses.
He is a solid boy, so it's not like he has slim build and his body can't cope. We've given him Centrum for kids on a daily basis, but no effect. I am at my wits end.
We have a paediatricians appt in late June (the earliest i could get) but I really want to know is what could it be? Are any of your kids always sick?? What did yo do??

It was me that was always sick at school. I caught everything going around and caught it severely. I went to a naturopath when I was older and was told to change my diet (to suit my blood type) and was given some natural remedies to take. It made a big difference in my immune system. If you don't get any answers from your paediatrician, I would recommend taking your son to a naturopath.
I hope you find some answers soon :)

Does he like swimming? I'd work on strengthening any points of weakness in his body.
Why don't you try a natruopath of TCM practitioner? Traditional Chinese Medicine is awesome for pinpointing areas of weakness in the body as a whole and treating as such.
I think Justin at the BB centre would be worth seeing, if my DS continues the same way as yours, that's what I'll be doing.
He is a little chatterbox isn't he? His lungs are probably overworked ;)

And in the meantime google Onion Syrup. That's what I give my kids when a cough goes around and it really works!

Natropath in the meantime, it is then.
he hates swimming, in fact any active sports he hates. He'd rather read or do something indoorsy.
I'm googling onion syrup now.
yeah, he never shuts up. It was his talking that gave us the sh*ts and now its his bloody cough. aaaaaaaaghhh.
We are so over him being sick and his constant chatter. I'm thinking of taking him back and asking for a refund!

I am incredibly biased because of my personal experince of ill health and the 'conventional' medical system which eventually ended when I saw a Naturopath about 5 years ago. I don't see doctors anymore - nor have I needed to since finding a fabulous Naturopath. I call it the 'system of illness' - where treatment consists of 'medicine' which is a band-aid approach that addresses the symptoms, and not the cause of the problem - which is the biggest problem with it!! It reminds me of that Whitlams song, "the drugs don't work, they just make you worse, and I know I'll see your face again.."
Definitely get into the system of natural medicine - it is the secret to long life and happiness in my opinion!! Contact ANTA (Australian Natural Therapists Association) if you need assistance in finding a registered and experienced Naturopath working near you.
And in the meantime, I highly highly recommend getting him onto the probiotic + superfood supplement 'In-Liven' - there is an article here on belly belly about it, otherwise you can order it from the Onegroup website. Expensive but brilliant - needs to be kept in fridge once opened.
Goodluck!

If you have central heating - have you got a good filter and is it cleaned regularly?
maybe have a look into an ionizer (negative ion generator)? they're supposed to keep dust particles from floating in the air.
one more thing about vitamins - personally since I started taking Usana vitamins (originate in Canada) they're the best thing I've ever taken to keep my immune system up! (and I'm a teacher!) ...a bit on the expensive side though but definitely worth it (coming from a person who never believed in vitamins before).

85% of your immunity is in the gut - I'd get him onto some probiotics, Fast Tract would be ideal. Its organic, super potent and a range of strains of good bacteria, not one or two like others. Its called a probiotic superfood. Inliven would also be okay, but he might not be able to take it if he's not good with taking things!

I've spoken to DH last night about Fast Tract and we'll be getting some of that.
I go home last night and on TVSN (Foxtel shopping channel) they had Vitagest, which is a probiotic superfood and they were saying how it's ideal for kids who are constantly sick. I was stunned.
I'll be buying it through the belly belly website.
We have central heating and haven't had the filters cleaned for since we built the house 3 years ago. I don't even know who to call to organise this.
Thanks again.

My dh had a cough for years that never went away. I drove me and everyone else crazy. We worked out it was a food allergy. It was caused mainly by chocolate. He never eats chocolate now and the cough is gone. Food alleries might be something to look into.

Funny that you mention that. When DS has icecream he comes down with a cough the next day. It drives us mad. We too made a decision the other day when he got his cough this last time that he was not allowed to have icecream again and we would not allow it into the house. I had given him icecream the night before.

Sounds like it may be a case of allergy elimination to get rid of the cough. You may even find his health improves if he isn't having allergy food. Alot of dh's family has dairy allergies. We started ds on soy milk today, as he has been vomiting all the time on cows milk. He has only had 1 soy bottle but didn't vomit, so we are hoping he keeps this up, if not we will try lactose-free milk.
Best of luck with it all.
