Diet coke
Okay,
I have always looved diet coke. When i was pregnant with DD i didn't touch 1 glass of it because i was constantly worried about the caffeine content. This pregnancy i just really want to have a glass (its my 'chillout time', have a coke and relax).
I went and bought some 'caffeine free' diet coke yesterday, but DH is still insistant that i have none. He says because its a diet drink it has the fake sugar (phenelephanie..spelling?? something like that) which can cause cancer (well so i've heard).
I argued with him, and he told me to hop on bellybelly :) today and ask for your expert advice, hehe.
What do you ladies think??
I've tried just getting a normal softdrink (like the flavoured mineral waters, or fanta etc) but its just not the same!! I don't really like the sweetness of them.. i just want my bland tasting diet coke...;)

i am addicted to coke (the drink lol) and i too was worried when i got pg
i asked my midwives and they said a can or two is ok, same as anyone who has a cup or two of coffee
i had to cut down from abt 2litres to 2 cans a day!
but yeh even baby books say its fine, bit wierd though when they get bigger and you have a can of coke and 5 mins later baby kicks like crazy!
my midwife even said i can have can of coke in labour...what can i say, its my vice! :) HTH

I'm a diet coke addict - but I figure I don't drink coffee so I'm allowed to have something naughty...
When I've been pg I've limited my coke drinking to no more than a glass a day, and when bf I only have it just after a feed (preferably at night when DD2 is asleep!)
It's definately not good for you, so I guess you have to weigh it up... IMO it's ok to have a treat every once in a while... ;)

I have been having regular coke on a regular basis (maybe once a fortnight). I hate Diet coke so I can't help you on that one! I hate all diet drinks they just taste yuck to me. I do take Panadine rapid solubles tho which have phenelethane/aspertame (fake sugar) in them. There is nothing on there to say pg women shouldn't take them.
HTH :)
IMO it's not really that bad, and it's not like you are drinking litres of the stuff or having it with scotch!

I drink the cafeine free diet coke as i am addicted to diet coke so like you i compromised.
Tell your man that going out in the sun gives you cancer as well and cooking food in the microwave and some deodarants, would he stop you doing that? Blah, men! i dont smoke or drink so if caffeine free diet coke is the worst thing i put in my body then i am happy with that. :)

the 'fake' sugar in diet drinks CAN affect a growing baby... it is nasty nasty nasty stuff.... i will try to find a book i have which actually gives more info, but as a severe addict, switch to the normal full strength coke - seriously...... the sugar in it is a hell of a lot safer for your baby than the chemicals in the diet stuff....
make the switch!

I have not touched Coke of any kind for years & years, I call it poison. But I would prefer to drink a glass of full strength coke rather than the diet stuff because of the artificial sweetener, as Emma said it's nasty stuff.

When I was pg with DS, I had a can of coke every day with my lunch. Now that I am pg again, I have sort of gone off it but every now and again I will have a 600ml bottle or a few swigs from DH bottle at night.
I too would steer clear of the diet drinks though for the fake sugar reason. I also stay away from equal and those sorts of artificial sweetners.

if you google "aspartame pregnant" you will find some staggering stuff (not the first few responses in google, down the page a little)... aspartame causes birth defects and can actually mess with a baby's DNA.... the american diaticians board (sorry don't know its official name) is funded by the aspartame manufacturers so it is not surprising that it has been declared safe for pregnant women to have.... there are a lot of calls to congress for this clearance to be abolished by leading experts swearing it is criminal....
B E W A R E !!
ps i am a massive coke drinker and recently switched to coke zero as i was trying to lose weight, however since becoming pregnant have switched back to regular coke, which in few weeks i will attempt to give up and just have it every so often.... i have coke zero in the fridge which i will poor down the sink if no one drinks it.

do a google search for yourself on the additives in Diet Coke and tell me what you think then ;)
I wouldnt drink now, let a lone pregnant.
You are better off drinking real coke, with real sugar, than putting those chemicals into your bloodstream and your baby.
JMO! But I think your hubby has a point...like I said though - google the ingredients in diet coke and read what comes up...decide for yourself

eeek! :o
Gosh you guys have really put me off, and a good thing too i think!
Now i feel really guilty for having a glass with tea last night..
But no more for me!! I'll let DH have a read of this thread and he'll probably do the 'told you so' face :nahnah: Damn it - why can't i always be right?! hahahah
Thank you again, i'm glad i know now rather than later!

I was going to post the same thing Cai.
FWIW I don't think it's that bad.
