Has anyone not worried about having the GTT?

Im just wondering if anyone has not bothered doing the Glucose Tolerance test. The hospital never even said anything to me about it, but I am involved in a study and they want me to do the long one. I am thinking about cancelling my appointment as it is tomorrow morning.

I have two children already and am perfectly healthy. My family has no history of diabetes.

If I do have any of the symptons of Gestational Diabetes can't I just get it checked out then? I doubt there will be any problem though.

Its just a huge inconvenience for me to try and get the kids up early, they are 3.5 and 2, and then be obviously waiting around for ages while I have the tests done. I just dont think it's really necessary.

Your advice and opinions would be much appreciated.

Hmm, I wouldn't cancel the appointment. I've had several pregnant friends with no family history of diabetes and no sign that they would have any issues either (AND had been fine in their first pregnancies!) only to test postive to gestational diabetes. A few of them had to make significant changes to their diets and lifestyle to manage it properly. Personally, it's not something I'd like to mess with. I'm yet to experience the test but I know it can be long and boring but I know I'd also prefer to know if I had diabetes.

Also, how would it affect your involvement in the trial??? Would you still be eligible to participate... how would it affect your care (ie change from current to another care plan) etc. I would fine this out first... but as much as the test is a hassle it can show surprising results.

I've never had it. I was low risk factor though, low age, no family history, not overweight...what other risk factors are there?

Perhaps you can just have the short one? I think it's a valid point that you don't want to do the long test unnecessarily with small children to entertain.

Apparently if I dont do the test tomorrow, the hospital may ask me to do the short test on Thursday when I have an antenatal appointment anyway. If they ask me to do it then that would probably be fine coz it would just be the short one and the kids will be going into the creche at the hospital.

Im gunna give the test a miss tomorrow. Too hard.

I had GD with my second pg and not with my first.

I have thought a bit about this test - they get you to fast for 12 hours and then have you drink a very sugary drink. I don't know that this test is all that good for a person that doesn't have GD but I wonder about the impact of a test like this in a person that does have GD. Logically, it doesn't seem to me to be a safe way to diagnose a condition like this.

Sorry if it a bit off topic but that is the sort of issue I woud look into before having the test again.

I would personally contact my health provider and have a chat to them before cancelling the test - just know what you want to ask about and discuss the issues with them. If you aren't happy with the answers, you can always postpone the test to another time when you feel more certain about the necessity of it.

I did the first test (only had to wait 1 hour) results came back too high, so my obgyn said I needed to do it again. I was so relieved I did it the second time b/c I was stressing all day that something was wrong, luckily it came back ok, but it was for the peace of mind also.

It does sound like you have your hands full with 2 littlies already, but I would do it if you can, don't cancel it is only 2 hours which really does go quite quickly.

I always only do the one hour but thats because the full test is actually fairly dangerous for me without a very good reason to do it. I'd get the short one done with little kids to entertain - its already hard enough to keep them happy for that long. The one and only time they had me do the long one (without doing the short one first) I had my sister there as well - thankfully, as I had a hypo in the hallway to the bathroom and the kids would have been completely unsupervised. Oh yeah, and who knows when someone would have stumbled across me.
