The house smells of dog! Will the smell come out? Should I still apply for it? Help!

Ok, so today we went and looked at a rental. We want to move, we haven't been in a real hurry and we have decided we do not want to buy just yet. So anyway, since we are expecting number two I thought it is time do get a move on and find a house to settle into.

Skip foward, the house is beautiful, a new house, nice area, in the suburb we want to live in (small town so it isn't often houses pop up) 3 bedrooms plus study, 2 living areas plus dining, DISHWASHER!!!, a backyard seperated into 2 areas (1 for DD to play, 1 for dog)... perfect!

PROBLEM... it stinks! The previous tenants had indoor dogs, and the carpets are badly stained, of what? I do not know, looks like dirty shoes, the house is yet to be cleaned, the agent assures us that it will be steam cleaned, deoderised and aired for 3 weeks and that the smell WILL come out.

QUESTION? Any experiences? Will the smell come out?

I love love love the house but I am a bit scared of being accepted, paying bond, time to move in and it SMELLS! What do you think?

I'd apply, and if you get accepted - just ensure with the RE, that if when you move in, and the smell is still there, that you can either have it cleaned, or they clean it again. It may take awhile for the smell to go.....

But if you love it that much hun, apply! :D

Do you think that they will be able to get the smell out by June 1st? The house is currently vacant so they have time to *work their magic*.

I really do not want to move in if it still smells. DH will go ape at the RE if it does smell when we move in and I do not want DD anywhere near the carpet it it is dirty or stinks as she is just learning to crawl.

Damn the smell, the house is SO NICE otherwise.

I don't know what to do...

I think I'd chance it that the smell will go. It's too good to pass up and I don't think I have ever heard of a dog smell that NEVER goes. Once dogs are removed the smell does too...

;) Hey DD ... not to worry my sis & i rented a huge house years ago & yeh, it too stunk of dog smell BUT once the owner got it steamed cleaner after a few weeks the smell went (before we moved in i might add) ... YOU might need to still open the windows on a daily basis for a couple of weeks (maybe for peace of mind) !!

This house i live in now that DP & i purchased 4 years ago smelt of cats ... yes cats ... and poor DP is allegic to cats to top it off ...so the previous owners got the carpets cleaned before we moved in and it worked a treat (BUT forgot to check for cats hairs attached to the drapes so i went on a cleaning frenzy when i moved in) :rolleyes:

Yeah it is just dog, not pee or anything really nasty like that just dirty dog...

I am so scared... :lol:

Ohh thankyou smiles4u... it is nice to hear of a story where someone has experienced this. Do you think that 3 weeks is enough? The house is vacant at the moment.

Our house smelled of cat when we first looked at it. Inbetween viewing and moving in, every time we drove past, all the windows were wide open. Didn't smell like cat when we moved in.

HOPE! I like hope ;).

I honestly think you might still smell a touch of it by then but it won't be overpowering ... and strangely enough cause you are on the hunt for the smell your senses will be at a higher level so it might smell stronger then it actually is (hope that made sense ??:rolleyes:) ... Yeh, just pop some nice fragrance room fresheners (like the plug in ones) in the carpeted areas & try air out the house when you can ... The smell WILL go away ;)

it should go. we had an inside dog at our old place, til he moved to MILs, and the smell did go away.

Argh! DH liked it to so actually agreed to applying... this is the first house we have looked at that he has agreed to apply for and yet I know that if it still smells that he will get very angry at the real estate and yet there will be nothing we can do but live with it until it goes.

There were about 5 couples that looked at it to and I didn't see anyone else get a application form, maybe one person, but they said they preferred the house they looked at prior to this house (that was with the same agent) so the agent told her she could apply for both with an option one and this house as option two... so what I am saying is I think there is little competition, so our chances are pretty good, I think that is also scaring me. I HATE the house we are living in but it is the only house the DH and I then also DD have lived in together, so although it is horrible, it is our home IYKWIM.

Hmm I think I will do it and have a chat to the agent also as she seems nice.
