Just saw the advert - seems they are having something related to birth choices - the woman said something about 'it's a choice women have been making since the dawn of time, now they're taking that choice away' and showed a bub being delivered by csection.

Mmmm, I wouldn't expect much from channel 7's 'debate' show. Hopefully the views of the audience will be displayed fairly - unlike the vaccine debate that was aired a few months back - where the uneducated host started verbally abusing audience members!!
Still, it should be worth a look...

My thoughts exactly. And no doubt they will selectedly-edit it so that Obs get the final word, true statistics are shielded from the public and homebirthing women are made to look like tree-huggin, risk-taking, hippies. :rolleyes::

I didnt see the whole thing but I did lie that they had Rikki Lake on it advocating home birth.
Hmm, well, I think all in all it was quite pro home birth. Even the doctor they were intereviewing at the end said that the majority of home births end with a healthy baby (but the ones that don't, are bad - well that can be said of hospital birth too).
I think the woman in America who's baby died was interesting, because it was put accross that it was due to the fact that the mid wife was too scared of prosecution - therefore showing that's what making it illegal does.
yep def more on the home birth side! i thought it was a great show on it :) didnt make me angry about them telling too much crap lol
was amazed to watch to 2 different births though and see the differece in the babies actions after being born........... made me cry watching the home birth :)
I thought it was totally skewed towards homebirth! (Hence I was quite pleased with the story overall, LOL!) Did you notice the difference in music and atmosphere between the hospital and homebirths in the story? In the hospital birth you didn't really 'get to know' the mother - she was pretty much just part of the scenery. And the whole waving the baby's hand and saying, hello... OMG, I thought I was going to puke. Way to spoil what could have been the most beautiful moment of those parents' lives. Just proved to me how much of a prat that OB is.
Whereas the homebirth was lovely, peaceful, all about the mother - the MW hardly featured at all. Had to laugh at the poo floating in the birth pool though ;)
I thought about visiting the website but I think there'd be too many people on there screeching about how irresponsible it is to show homebirth favourably... blah, blah, blah...

Honestly, that was the only thing in the whole story that really invoked emotion in me. I wanted to punch him through the tv. Why would you do that?

Congratulations to my friend Anna - who was the homebirth Mum in that segment. I thought she was amazing!
I've been talking with her (and interviewed/filmed myself) for that segment - and it's amazing how much has got chopped off - interviews with other birth professionals (eg midwives etc) that could refute Dr Pesce's stats. A bit sad :(
I'm so bummed I missed it :( I tried to watch it online but it appears that its not important enough to have online!!! Now if I want to watch any of the 6 videos on the girl that was kidnapped at 11 then I can watch that.... don't get me wrong poor girl but maybe 5 vids on her would be enough so I could see the 1 segment that I'm interested in. grrrrrr

Bloody awesome! I really hope it came across to the general public that Pesce was talking out of his arse and actually lying about the 'planned homebirth' mortality rates.

The show has really made me want a home birth just that tiny bit more now!

Just a question, the hospital baby was clearly a Csect, a vaginal hospital baby would be more alert like a homebirth vaginal birth right? It probably wasn't the best comparison to make.
Oh, and the bit where the OB was talking to the woman before her csect, and was asking her if she was going to breastfeed this one, I thought PFFT, how many OBs actually do spend time chatting before the op and care about breastfeeding? I know there would be some, but this guy just doesn't come accross as one of those to me.
When the Ob was talking about stats and was talking about a "planned hospital birth", i wondered whether he was talking about all hospitals births or just c-sections, in that there is more planning (and less left to nature/baby to contribute).

I am really wondering about the stats he quoted? How on earth could that be right, when there are so many more higher-risk births taking place in hospital? And so many more inductions? I don't get it, and I wish they'd be more specific about where they get their information. So frustrating.
Dunno... I guess the outcome would be similar if the vag birth in hospital took place in a pool with no drugs. I thought Anna's baby looked so very peaceful rather than alert. My vag births in hospital haven't taken place in water and my babies were both screaming their heads off, LOL! Phoebe quietened down fairly quickly cause she had a feed straight off the bat. Natty wasn't interested in feeding straight away though... and she cried that whole first night pretty much.:

I liked your son saying that too, my DD who is 5 was giggling away behind her hand!!
It was great for her to watch actually, I was able to tell her that this was what Mummy was doing when she was in hospital having DS (in the bath etc) and she was fascinated. I would really love a Home birth if we have a third, after realising just how amazing my body is when having DS in March, which was drug free and he was 11pd, it made me realise that if I just listen to my body and follow your natural instincts it is amazing what your body and mind can do.
I think the example of the Home Birth that went wrong in the US is a prime example of what happens when you take peoples freedom of choice away....suddenly everything is pushed underground and then there are no regulations in place...this couple had to pick a unregistered MW and had no way of checking on her credibility....couple that with her being afraid of being prosecuted and it was a disaster before it even began.
I think the Obs statistics come from studies that compare all hospital births to all births outside hospital. This would include freebirths (no midwife), unplanned homebirths, babies born on the way to hospital (car,ambulance, side of road) as well as homebirths with qualified midwifes.:

Congratulations Anna on your HB and thank you for sharing this with us all... I attended the rally in Canberra and this is the first footage I have seen of it anywhere.. To anyone who watched this on Channel 7's site, I just wanted to see if you noticed that there is a poll for whether you believe women should have the choice to HB and I just voted and the numbers were 96% say yes and 4% say no... great outcome in a poll.. Thanks again Anna.. a beautiful birth...

Yep - was definitely fairer than I thought it would be. Thanks to Anna for allowing us to witness your beautiful birth - and so wonderful for the rest of Australia to see it too.
Poo or no poo - it was awesome. My DH said "oh my god - how easy was that?" lol.
Hence why I want an intervention-free waterbirth!!
I think why so many people fear homebirth is because they translate all the complications they hear about in hospital births (high c-sect rates etc) and immediately assume that those complications would occur and the babies would die if the woman attempted to birth at home. What they always fail to mention is that the majority of the birth complications that occur in hospital occur because of intervention in the first place. Intervention (Induction/drugs = increased risk + complications = increased intervention).
The very fact that home birthing mothers reject artificial induction of labour and drugs is why the rate of true complications are so rare in homebirth - they simply cannot be compared to hospital births that use intervention in perfectly healthy women and babies.
It would be awesome if they compared the statistics for intervention-free hospital birth with artificially induced hospital births, for example.
Anyways..... the show was a step in the right direction. And yeah, the footage of the rally was great - I think it would have made alot of people stop and think. :clap:
It was a bald-faced lie or plain ignorance on Pesce's part to cite that study - neither trait of which I like to see in a health professional. He kept saying 'planned homebirth' and the stats included more than just planned HB's! They also included high-risk women, high-risk women who just didn't make it to a planned hospy birth, etc. It was a skewed study. He only ever uses the one study and says others arent' relevant because they were conducted in other countries. What he's trying to say is that Australian women are somehow biologically so different from Dutch, NZ, and UK birthing women that the stats cannot possibly be be used to support HB in Oz. We are only systematically different - by using HIS preferred system, Oz women are at a distinct disadvantage! At the Senate Inquiry he tried to say he was for choice, just not HB choice...ummm...listen to yourself!
Anyway, I think the HB gone wrong was also a perfect illustration of an underground HB. THe couple would have been better off freebirthing and going with their feeling that it wasn't going right :( That would still have been the product of an unregulated system and not fair on the family. Yes, the baby may well have lived had they been at hospy...and had a MW who wasn't scared, who was more skilled than fearful and who had some professional cred to front up to the hospy with.
My DS was a FBC waterbirth with HypnoBirthing and he was born quite like Anna's. The effect of moving from home was on me, and I never want to get into a car during labour ever again if I don't need to :)
I am really pleasantly surprised at how well Ch 7 produced this piece, and it now is clear to me why we saw the Ch7 people there at the rally and next to no reporting on that night's news...they were making THIS!

As I was reading the transcript of him speaking at the Inquiry hearing thingy, I kept laughing and reading it to DP because it was just so stupid - every turn he took he was cornered with very little effort! Why anyone keeps asking for his opinion is beyond me - he has no personal experience with HB whatsoever. At least ask a GP or OB who's attended HB's, puhlease :rolleyes:

Jenifer Holloman is the woman from the US who was interviewed on the Sunday Night Show last night. She has sent me several emails this morning and has asked if I can forward this statement on her behalf to anyone who may have been watching the show.
"I would like to impart to all Australian women and their families- that our family is so disappointed with how Australia Sunday Night chose to edit our story down to its most tragic details and infer through their choice of tableaus and pictures of our grieving family, that we somehow wanted to be portrayed as nothing more than victims of bad home birth midwifery where a doctor saved the day.
The doctor is just a part of the story, perhaps if I had used a more negative word instead of "poor doctor" they would have edited it differently- For the record, the same doctor will not help us in our efforts to hold this midwife accountable, he has not even returned my letter and follow up phone call requesting his help in this matter. We have invited him to hold this midwife accountable for her actions that affected him and his staff. As I like to say: "Apparently, home birth lost a baby that day, not our family."
What we would have liked to impart to all home birth parents in Australia is that we never agreed to a story that would play into the skewed and unoriginal rhetoric of doctors, who think a hospital birth is superior to a home birth. In our particular case the crux of the issue is that in our state, midwives have no standard licensure and anyone virtually can call themselves a midwife regardless of whether or not they are astutely trained as out of hospital midwives. The competence and training is our issue, not necessarily the licensure.
We believe good midwives need this distinction and poor providers need to be sanctioned through something that the state provides such as a board of registration of midwives where midwives decide what the credentialing process would be and where consumers can trust that they can get statistics on sanctions, IUFD, etc. so they can choose safe home birth knowing that their provider is trained at the gold standard of out of hospital birth care.
Secondarily, we believe that by doctors and legislators refusal to acknowledge that out of hospital birth is safe and cooperate with home birth parents and midwives, they are saying that mothers and babies are collateral damage for their reckless and dangerous policy of non-cooperation with mothers who birth at home and their trained providers.
Lastly, we said everything we did- which the show of course didn't show - in an effort to try to show legislators and doctors that we are the human toll for bad health care policy. This is for our own family, in our own state. We did not intend in any way to support the myth propagated by doctors and in this case- Sunday Night Australia - that home birth is dangerous. Bad health care policy and non-cooperation amongst professionals in perinatal care- now there is something dangerous!"

I thought the show was pro-HB, but I WISH they would interview a 'health professional' who is not so anti-HB, at least another opinion from doc or midwife who've actually attended a HB, as lulu says.
For what it's worth, re the segment on the couple that lost their baby, I took it as an indictment of the health system there and criminalisation of homebirth midwives, not as 'proof' that hospitals and doctors were better.
All in all, the segment wasn't bad.

Dr. Pesce was giving me the heebee jeebies, though. To someone who knows nothing about HB, his strong statements and blatant misinformation would have skewed the whole segment anti HB, I think. He kept saying that an Australian Hospital is the safest place in the world to have a baby these days. What is he basing that statement on?
Unfortunately, to many people watching this, who are likely to have been biased against HB to start with, his "professional" opinion would have held more weight than the opinion of a "hippie" HBing mum.
The more subtle things like the calmer HB baby, etc. would have gone unnoticed by many viewers. To some, a hysterically crying baby is a sign of good health.
However, it was probably the most balanced piece on the topic I have seen on mainstream media.

By the way, I have had a FBC all natural waterbirth with DD and she didn't cry initially, then cried a little before being very calm and alert, then fallinng asleep. DS was born at home (was planned as a FBC waterbirth, but we never made it out of the door)) on the loungeroom floor with only my mum and DD present. It was not a peacful experience as such, as it wasn't planned like that. But I was at peace with the idea of him being born right there and then when I realised we weren't gonna make it to the BC. Nobody was stressing. He cried initially, but calmed the moment I put him to my chest.
So, I reckon your baby's state after birth is not only related to where he or she was born. It has a lot to do with the mother's stress levels and if being at home makes you feel relaxed, then chances are, your baby will be, too. Of course drugs during labour have a very profound effect on the baby's alertness.
I was very pleasantly surprised with how positive they actualy were to home birth! Based on their circumcision and vaccination stories and 'debates' last season, I was sure my blood would boil watching the HB story on Sunday night, but it seemed to me to be quite balanced.
Oh, and thankyou Anna for sharing such a wonderful birth!
