When you walked out of the hospital for the first time ...

Did you walk? Have a wheel chair? Did YOU carry bub? Your partner? Someone else? Or did you put them in the capsule/pram? Did you walk to the car or get your partner/someone else to bring the car to the front door of the hospital?

I'm interested, I was going back over my birth announcement and just thinking about when we left with Jazz...

I walked out carrying Jazz to the car, which was parked in the car park.

Shel's mum was HORRIFED that they not only let me walk to the car (they offered the wheelchair to the door, but I was ok to walk), but let me carry Jazz, 3 days after the c/s. :rolleyes: And I think my mum was pretty surprised that I walked out too.
Anyway, then I was also thinking about the fact that they offered me the wheelchair, wondering how many people take that option.
And then I read somewhere that someone took the pram in and wheeled bub out in the pram (I don't even think the pram was in the car, I doubt I would have thought of it!)?

Anyway, just wondering what everyone else does? lol, nice random question haha.

I must say though, I can't think of a better feeling that would trump walking out of hossy with your brand you bub in your arms... just ah, as long as you don't slip ;)

#1 i walked out carrying him in his capsule, mum took me home as DH was at work. i can not remember if i was offered a wheel chair or not...

#2 well i was home so no car needed :)

LOL funny question! I guess in our parent's day it was normal to be wheeled out?

I walked out and carried each of our babies. DH brought the car to the front entrance of the hospital (the car park was miles away).

We walked to the car, which was parked quite close to the side hospital entrance. I carried DS. This was I think 4 (or 5) days after a c/s. I didn't even think of doing things any differently.

It was the nicest and strangest feeling holding my DS, and having everyone looking and smiling as we walked by :).

I walked to the car in the carpark & carried DD & the nappy bag. DF had to make 2 trips carrying everything else :lol:

With DD1 we had the pram, and with DD2 I carried her. DD1 was so little, and I was scared to carry her for a long distance LOL and DH had his hands full with all the flowers. With DD2, I was a pro by that stage, and we left before anyone had a chance to give flowers/presents.

I walked from the labour ward to my room all 3 times.
Walked carrying them all to the car in the car park. Wasn't offered a wheel chair to leave. I didn't have c/s though.

Hehehehe agreed! I felt so proud!

I have carried all my bubbas to the car myself, and have never been offered a wheelchair.... not that I would of used it!! Dh has carried the bag, flowers etc...

I have left as late as 2 days later, and as early as the next morning after an afternoon baby.

i walked out with bubs in my arms both times, such a great feeling.
with DD1 they checked both our ID tags on the way out to check i was taking home the right baby, lmao.
Second time i had a check up with the OB b4 i left and she said she'd be back to let me know i could go home. waited for like 2 hours and then a midwife came in and said what are u still doing here, go home!

I let DP carry DD out in his arms from the hossy. He already did about 4 trips to teh car with everything else so I figured I'd let him carry the most important thing.

I carried a bunch of flowers. It was lovely. We left on day 3 after a VB.

I walked and carried CJ to the car in the carpark, wasn't offered a wheelchair... This was 4 days post CS.

I walked out, although I think they offered me a wheelchair from memory. It was lovely having everyone smile at us. DH brought the car around and I'll never forget, while I was waiting an old man came up and looked at DS and said something lovely about new babies, and then asked his name and he said "I hope you didn't call him Noah. MY granddaughter called her son that and it's a stupid name". I was mortified because if I'd had my way, DS would of been Noah. Would of made for a slightly devastating moment :o

DP pushed me out to the car in a wheel chair, I was carrying DS. That was 3 days after a CS. I was an emotional wreck and doubt I could have made it to the car walking. It probably would have taken me an hour if I had tried LOL.

It was the strangest feeling, hard to describe. DP had been running around back and forth putting our stuff in the car. The cleaners were whizzing around me getting the room ready for the next person. I was bawling my eyes out cos the blues had hit and I was still coming to terms with everything. I looked a treat!

Venturing out into the big wide world again after being cooped up was so nice though. I hadn't seen sunshine or fresh air the whole time.

Walked out both times :)

With DD1 she was in a stroller because the car was parked miles away and there was sooooo much stuff to carry, with DD2 I carried her out - didn't get given so much stuff the second time around LOL

Was a wonderful feeling leaving hospy both times.

DH did a few trips to the car with flowers, gifts and my bags etc than parked car at the enterance came up and got DD and myself and i walked out with her in the capsual! was one of the proudest moments of my life! i wanted everyone to look at her and admire her which a few people did! I will always remember that day!

With DS, DH carried him out in the capsule, with me shuffling along beside, he left us in the foyer then brought the car to the door.

With DD, I had her in the sling & slowly shuffled to the door, again DH left us in the foyer & brought the car to the door. I had nurses commenting how sweet she was dozing in the sling.


I had emergency c/s both times & wasn't offered a wheelchair, both times it was 3 days post surgery.

i walked out, DP carried DS & my dad carried the rest of the stuff (he had to come to drive my car which had the car seat cos it's a manual & DP drives an auto hehe). i think i was carrying DS but i needed to go to the toilet before we left so i handed him over. we walked out to the car in the car park, but it wasn't that far.

i'd been waiting in the waiting room for an hour or so before they arrived (last minute installation of the car seat) & i think the hospital had forgotten i even existed by that time!

we walked out! small maternity hospital so no lifts/stairs or massive carparks to traipse around...

pity that we didnt know how to use the car capsule though LOL! we fumbled around for a good 10 minutes trying to get the straps the right length for her LOL! (she was a tiny bub)...

Oh, yeah Sarah thats a good point... I might replace the word "walk" with the word "shuffle"... that was more like what I did!

Clare, we spent a good 15-20 minutes trying to get the straps right too! It was frustrating and at one point I remember Shel something something along the lines of "we'll you'll just have to live here because I can't get this right!" :rofl:

i walked out both times with bubs in my arms, was the best feeling :heartbeat: i also love the smiles everyone gave us, i walked to the car with DH

... i remember walking out dressed like a Queen with a beautiful black winter coat as it was freezing weather with my sparkly diamenete brooch and all makeup on & hair looking fab, i did it thinking both my old-fashioned grandmothers & my very poshy Auntie whom all had passed away would have been so proud to see me dressed like i was a Queen, LOL :D

I walked out with DD wrapped in a beautiful baby shawl in my arms with DP walking in front carrying everything & i felt the most beautiful feeling like i was floating on air (but then that might have been lake of sleep too, LOL) ... to the carpark at the front of the hospital ... and then of all of the people who happened to walk behind me moments before was approached our car was one on the beautiful midwives whom saw me throughout my pregnancy ... she being there while putting DD in car was an added bonus to a wonderful & very special day :heartbeat::heartbeat::heartbeat:

(for me it was easier walking out as had vag birth so need for wheelchair here !!)

DF did a few trips to the car before coming back to get DD & I, I walked from my room on the maternity ward to the car (using the lift to get downstairs) and DF carried DD in the baby capsule he was so proud. The car was close to the exit so i didnt have far to walk. MIL was visiting at the time and she kept asking me if i was ok.

Ds1, I walked out with Noah in the pram, Phil had parked it a pick up zone so not far to walk.

DS2, I walked, I think I carried Spence, or maybe it was dh?

Both times I have also walked from the Birth room to my room in the ward

first time with DS we had DS in the pram - it was already there as they encouraged people to take walks with bub and family in the grounds while we were in hospital. We also have to take out a LOT of stuff as I was in over Christmas and everyone came and had Christmas morning in the hospital with us (and yes I do mean everyone - MIL, mum, me and DH, my two SIL and their families - I think even great grandma was there???)

With DD she went home in the wrap/sling - I felt so good being able to pop her in there and walk out.

As for walking out to the car and being horrified I walked myself out of the birthing suite with bub and my bags and went and sat in the waiting area as they left me in the birthing room and it was freezing, mind you that was after a VB not a c-sec.

I walked out, holding DD. All the oldish ladies were all wanting a look, and I was more than happy to show off my bundle. I was released 22 hours after giving birth.
I didn't get offered a wheel chair I don't think. I did get wheeled out of the deliver suite to my room in a wheel chair, but I was still doped up on Pethidene.

DS1 - Walked out with him in the capsule. That was 4 days after his birth.
DD1 - Walked out with her in the capsule. That was 12hrs after her birth.
DS2 - Walked out holding him. That was 1 day after his birth.
DD2 - Walked out wheeling DD in the baby crib at the hospital. That was 4 hrs after her birth.

All my births were VBs.

Interesting question...

Hospital policy was that we had to wheel the baby in the bassinet thing to the door, but I wheeled him to the car that DH brought right up to the door where they have a maternity drop off / pick up point. At no point was a wheelchair offered to me, despite my c-sect 3 days prior...

With DD I walked out and DH carried DD. With DS I walked out and we had a capsule so DH carried DS too. I really wanted to carry them but DH kinda bet me to it so I let him as I'd been in hospital with them for days and had heaps more cuddles than he had.

The hospital I had DS in we weren't allowed to carry baby at all. Hospital policy. Not until release so that we couldn't sue if we tripped over something & hurt baby I think.

i carried DS to the car and had to unwrap him to put him in it was cold i was ok if i walked really slow but the car ride was not gentle lol it was a tad painful i tore so i had stiches it hurt more when i left that was 2 days after he was born probably coz i'd been taking panadol every 4 hours and panadeine forte once a day

We werent allowed to carry our bub in the hospital either (outside your room that is) so DS was wheeled outside in his plastic bed thingy and dh had parked the car just near the door. We had a little family picture taken by the nurse that came with us out the front - by this stage i had ds in my arms then we put him straight in the car and off we went. I walked myself but i also had a vag birth so it was fine - i wasnt offered a wheel chair. I did have my first ride in a wheel chair when i was moved from the birthing suite to my room though, i thought this was odd at the time and i felt like everyone was staring at me - but i hadnt really thought past the whole birth thing and onto how yu got to your room :)

Ds was wheeled out in the hosiptal crib after a stern lecture from a mw about not carrying babies around in the hopsital :rolleyes: But I did get picked up in a limo!

Dd, I carried her. And yep,it was awesome :D

I had a CS with DD1. She was in NICU so unfortunatly I walked out alone, but yes I walked, they did not even think of offering to help, I was discharged 4 days post birth though.

I was up and walking 12 hours after her birth and within 16 hours I was walking about 120 metres to the nursey and back, with no assistance as there were no wheelchairs available and I was determind to see my baby, they never tried to stop me (although I am glad of this).

i walked out pushing dd in the pram with the capsule attachment on it. we knew we'd have to adjust it around her. DH had done a few trips out to the car already so we went out and he bought the car up. it was ater 5pm, so dark (start of june) and the entry to the hospital is on a very steep hill. DD was asleep before we got to the car - and stayed that way until we got home over 45 mins later. we stopped on the way home to make sure she was ok lol.

no offer of a wheelie for me though - she was born early fri and we didn't leave til late tues as she had lost too much weight - so i felt no dramas from the cs and only got the meds they recommended to have them at home just in case

With all 4 I walked out carrying them in my arms.. Dh would go get the car and bring it to the entrance so I didn't have to walk to far..

My DH, MIL and SIL came to pick us up from the hospital. I had DD by emergency c/s on Thursday and was discharged on Sunday. I walked to the car. I honestly can't remember if it was DH or SIL who carried DD to the car. She was in her capsule. I do remember as we were waiting for the lift, there was a group of expectant motherrs doing their hospital tour. The nurse asked if they could look at Molly and she was full of praise about how DD was strapped into her capsule correctly. (it was SIL old capsule so I should hope she knew how to use it ;) )
But thinking back probably shouldn't have walked. I had been walking around the room and was fine short distances but was quite shakey on longer distances.

With DS, I walked out carrying him in my arms. It felt very surreal.
He cried when we tried to work out how to put him in the car seat and I sat in the back seat next to him the whole way home!
