Hair Straighteners
Ok, so they range from $30 to $300 and I ain't spending $300 on a 16 yo's hair applicances.
I do like to get good things that will last the distance and be kinder to her hair since DD uses it everyday.
I don't wanna go too cheap, but I think theres a point where you are paying for the hype (GHD for example).
Any ideas or recommendations??

I love the remington ones they have always been good and you can use a low heat cost me aroubd $70
-
"Hi lift" is a great low end version of the GHD. And it also has temperature control (don't know if the ghd does now but it didn't used to). I've used both and can't tell the difference - friend in hair dressing also said they did salon trials and no real difference. Is about $100.
-
Whats the IONIC thing they crap on about?
-
Um its supposed to have less charge of electricity or something - so less static/frizz. But if you get one with a ceramic plate this is good too as it heats evenly and is less static than metal. Much like cooking with a ceramic pan.
-
I have a hi lift and it is great.
I just dont have the patience to straighten everyday.
I got mine from HHWH for $99 on special and it came with some defrizz serum and a bag full of HH goodies.
-
I've tried so many over the past few years and sorry, but you really can't go passed GHD's  I know they are pricey but you do get what you pay for. Also if she's using them everyday they will be alot better fot her hair.
I think I would have spent way more than the GHDs cost on all the othre straightners i've had and none of them came close to the GHDs. They are incredible!
-
sorry babe i love my GHD - I' ve used others and they really are the best ... just big $$$ i know .... but if she looks after it she'll have it for years and years
-
yep i'm with the ghd girls also love mine and have tried quite a few brands but they just ruined my hair sorry.
-
I got my GHD second hand - good as new and only used twice for $150 so that could be an option too.

-
I have a ghd aswell, it is my 5th straightner as all the other were crap.. I got mine for $180 from my hairdressers. Honestly i wouldnt go past ghd.
-
Can someone please let me know what ghd is?
I'm new to the world of hair straighteners lol
-
lulu2 - its seems that the GHD is the best. I have used one and they are fab (adkins they are a brand of hair straightners).
however i also dont have the $$ to spend on that.
i just bought a vidal sasson wet to dry. it is nice and streamline and small. and i think it is fantastic!
they were on special at harvey norman here in brisbane for $19 down from $80.
so very cheap and i think it would def do the trick for your daughter :)

GHD is a brand - I think it stands for: "Great Hair Day"...
-
Ah, ok, so what makes them stand out from all the others?
-
The GHD is completely worth it!!
I colour my hair (not a natural blonde unfortunately) and my hair always looks, feels and IS shiny and healthy even though I straighten it at least three times a week. It never gets that dry/straw-like look because the GHD doesn't burn it. I have had mine for three years and it will easily go another five. I don't know what they do that is so different from the rest - but whatever it is it WORKS. They are the best. I will never buy another brand.
The initial $300 up front seems like a lot but it's nothing when you have to replace a cheaper one every 1-2 years.
-
lol i have no idea.
but i know when you use one your hair feels like you just stepped out of a hairdresser, and it stays straight for days! lol
but like i said the VS one i bought is great. i can do my whole head in 10 minutes!

I've got a Babyliss which I love. I had a very wide paddle Remmington (still have got it). It was fine but I wanted narrow paddles so I could do curls and flicks more easily. My Babyliss was about $60 at a 50% off sale! A lot of hairdressers use them. I use it almost every time I wash my hair (about 3-4 times a week). I have to use the hottest setting for my hair though because it's quite thick. Mine heats up in less than 5 seconds to max which is about 220 degrees.
-
I love my GHD too. Got it about a year ago and it has changed my life! I have incredibly thick, curly hair and the GHD is the only straightener I've ever used that actually gets it straight and doesn't leave it frizzy. I've bought others over the years but they just end up getting thrown out.
Do a search on line to see if you can find a cheap one. A friend of mine found a brand new one on ebay for around $200 the other week...
-
lulu- do you want to buy my ghd from me? i never use it, i'm pretty sure i've still got the box and everything.
-
Go for it Lulu!!!!!!!! If you say no I have second dibs for my DD13!
-
I have a Whal wich is made in the same factory with the same materials as the GHD but just doesnt have the name(appreantely???)! Its fantastic! It heats up quick and i have had it for over 3 years and its still fab! I think they are about $100? but i did buy it over 3 years ago! Good luck! x

I do understand not wanting to spend the $$ on a GHD, but they are worth every cent. I've had 2 remingtons (one basic and one wet-to-dry which allows you to straighten wet hair) and both of them died. The GHD is as good as the day I bought it... Check out ry dot com dot au, they are sometimes a little cheaper :)
-
Yanno, I was really hoping to find a heap of replies telling me how CRAP GHD is and I can get one heaps cheaper for $80....bugger it!!!
I've PM'd Rainy........
-
DD had a Vidal Sassoon which was good but she has since bought herself a GHD and she LOVES it. Watch out for burns though, she has burned herself on hers this weekend really badly when she forgot it had been on recently (OK maybe your DD is smarter than mine LOL).
-
I LOVE my GHD!!! I've tried other straightners, but they just didn't do the job. I have a pink & a black one :D
-
DD has a hot pink one too Jodi, it came with a packet of lip glosses too!
Good luck Lulu, sorry we couldn't have been more anti GHD LOL
-
The GHD is really worth it. It is amazing, you'll never have to buy another one again! I used the remington one a while ago now and although it was ok, when I used the GHD, I was blown away with results.
-
GHD is selling a limited edition purple one at the moment *drools*
-
GHD here too!! They are awesome, worth the money. Be careful lots of imitations on eBay.
-
GHD here too and I have the purple one!!! So drool away amysarah!
To the person who asked why they are better: many reasons starting with the fact that they are ceramic plates and high quality, highly pur ceramic at that which means that the heatis evenly distrbuted and you don't get hot and not so hot spots which affect the end result of the hair style. They also work at a very high and very stable heat which ironically means less damage to the hair shaft as you only need to do one pass with the straightener. Starighteners that advertise wet to dry DO NOT BUY.......wet hair means steam.... steam means damage to the hair shaft big time. By the same token straighteners that advertise variable temperatures again means you have less control over the result and generally means that the straightener needs longer contact with the hair shaft to work meaning more damage to the hair shaft. It is a bit like the theory behind UHT milk...super high temperature for less than a second...same thing with the hair straightener because although it is super hot it is not in contact with the hair long enough to do damage to the shaft but is enough to provide great styling results. Hope that makes sense!!
that is just a couple of reason why they are better for more info try googling their website....i think you have to google ghdhair as just ghd is a financial planner or something like that!
-
I am obviously the only one dissapointed in mine...I find that my $50 remington ceramic does at least the same job ......
-
great explanation MEL! yes GHD are the way to go, very good indeed, i have had both and can definately recommend the GHD. i actually bought one from ebay years ago and was caught out! a fake! cord has issues with it...then i saw a story on ACA or Today Tonight about ebay imitation GHD's! maybe not everyone has been caught and there are genuine ones on there but i was the unlucky one. so i bought another GHD and haven't looked back since!
good luck!!
-
If she's going to use it every day, then you'd be wanting one that's nice and quick to use. GHD do have a good reputation.
That said, I can't fault Vidal Sassoon either. And as someone said, many hairdressers use Babyliss too.
And depending on when people have tried other brands - I used to sell straighteners at work, and they are always getting better and better. They used to take ages to heat up, and now most are ready to go in a minute. :)
-
Hair straighteners are the BANE of my life!!!! Arrrrgggghhhhh!!!!! :wall: My DH's blood pressure also rises at the mere mention of them too. Only because we have a 13yo DD. Who uses hers at any given opportunity, ie SEVERAL times a day... every day. And she is forever leaving the bloody thing ON! And within reach of my toddler!!!! And she is ruining her beautiful hair!!! :( :( :( We have tried confiscating the bloody thing but her friends just end up giving their spare ones to her... and/or doing it for her at school!!!! She has a collection of about 3 or 4 ATM. She doesn't seem to express any preferences though... she has a Coles $30 one and uses that one just as much as the others. No way KNOWN would I be spending $300 on one for her. Call me a dragon mummy but I am at my WITS END!!! For a start she would take it to school... probably get it stolen... leave it on all the time and burn herself even more badly than she currently is.
Sorry to hi-jack your thread Lulu... but if anyone has any advice about what i can do about Hair Straightener abuse then please share!!! And if you think i am over reacting then may you too have to deal with a 13yo Hair straightener addict in your home!!! :P
-
Buy her the $300 GHD Bath - she will only need to straighten it every 2-3 days instead of everyday!
*Waits to get slapped* :hide:
-
Amy... Hmmm.... maybe after we pay the $8,000 we owe her school in fees and the $200 she racked up in calling mobile phones on our phone bill, and the $260 we apparently have to spend on the school scientific calculator next year, and the $500 in text books.... need I go ON! LOL I won't slap you... just my own forehead!!!
-
Bar your home phone! If anyone wants to call mobiles here, they use their own! Chopped my bill down by about $150 per quarter.
Her hair IS gonna fall out Bath, far out! Does she use it in the bathroom? My DD uses hers in her bedroom and I'm putting a hook on the wall for this one.
I bought Rainys GHD!!! Muchly happy with that, get good product for good price WOO HOO!
