How many words at 1 year?

The answer I am looking for is not LOTS, or even a handful really...

Jazz says mum. She also makes a magpie warbling gutteral noise with her throat when she 'talks' to us, and trys to have quite long conversations with us.

But nothing other than mum.

She started to make some other sounds, looking like they were turning into words, but never did...

:redface: is this ok? I read to her, talk to her, she understands lots, and points, shares, waves and claps... and pats my boobies when she's hungry LOL... just no words.

Need some reassurance (and I repeat, the answer I'm looking for is not LOTS lol, I don't want to hear about your advanced communicator ;) but if she's behind... is she behind???).

My DD had only 6 words at 18 months. She is now 2 years, 2 months and she is doing short sentences. Your DD sounds perfectly normal to me ... be warned though ... once they start getting words, they really take off. It is amazing!!! You have lots to look forward to ;)

Matilda is at about the same stage as Jazz, she has been able to say Mum since about 4 months and then nothing more since, we thought that Bub and Car were coming but it never progressed.

She to can clap, shares when I say 'Ta', points and generally understands and she babbels alot, just no more words just yet.

I read on some sign at the MCHN that the norm is apparently 3 words at 12 months but the MCHN said that 1 is fine along with babbeling.

At this stage I am not to worried, I will give her until 18 months to get another word or two.

Ds only had a couple of words at 2, like mum and dadda, even by 18 months his only other words were 'up' and 'there' it was amazing how much he was able to communicate using just those words and pointing! He is now 2 years and 3 months and seriously won't stop talking and has a huge vocabulary, it was slow coming but when once he worked it out he just hasn't stopped (must take after daddy :rolleyes:)

We are getting some serious babbling at 13 months, and have maybe two words, shoe, and dog, but others come and go depending on what we are talking about. I know he recognises lots of words and will imitate me with things that generally sound like what I say, but I have no consistency. Even with mum and dad...... I am not worried, as DS is so focused on physical, I know words will come in their own time.

ETA - sorry we are EXCELLENT with Ta. I forgot that one. He is very polite....

She sounds fine leash, don't stress mate.

Miss M says "mum", and weirdly enough, "tickle". But she babbles ALOT. Like - ALL THE FREAKIN TIME (must take after her father... cos I don't talk at all ;)) hehe

Aricyn was slightly ahead of her with his words at that age, but he was (and still is) an advanced talker - so even though I have him to compare her to - I'm not worried.

Sounds perfect hun. Learning language is not just about being able to SAY words, it's also about understanding, body language/ sign language, facial expression, eye contact, babbling and just being able to communicate with her (lots of things!!). She sounds absolutely perfect and just where she is 'supposed' to be for a one year old.

DD didn't say 'Mum' until she was nearly 2. I don't know how long she was doing it, but I realised when she was about 20 months that she was referring to me by my first name. Toddlers are little smarty pants!!! Their antics are just so much fun :)

My DS is now 13 months and he already has 6 words, but I attribute that to DD being around and he has learned a lot from her. He is far more communicative than she was at this age . . . though DD had been walking for about 3 months by this stage and DS is not even remotely interested.

I think they are all so different and they have different strengths. I also think that birth order probably has something to do with when and how kids meet their developmental milestones.

Um... Ava's words... 'mum', dad, mummy/daddy, baby, yes, no, hello, bye, ball, dude (lol yeah i know), yay, bot bot (for her bottle), shoes, woof, meow, quack. ... um.. I think that's it... and she's what almost 16 months.. don't stress leash jazz will do things in her own time. I know a two year old who knows less words than ava..

She's still communicating hun. Spoken words are only 10%of communication.

'Mum' is a constant word here too. Us Mums all rock, that's why! ;)

Tara's first word was Hello really early on. Now she says Hello, mum mum, Hello Daddy and waves and claps and points. I think Jazz is doing fine!

We got nothin' here too Leash - except saying dadadada constantly. She might have two words dada and dog but that could just be her saying dadadada. She's babbling all the time too. She sounds like that Sting song 'de do do doo, de da da da that's all I've got to say to you...'

DS1 didnt have many at all til 15-18 months, they all seems to come at once and very quickly when they did come, but I remember being concerned and then all of a sudden he spat out LOTS of new words.

Lyta didn't say anything more than Mum and Dad until she was 2 years old.

Now you can't shut her up!!!!

:) My boy was very advanced. So I won't talk about how he doesn't ever shut up and was "talking" within 24 hours of birth.

At age 1 year, 20 words is normal, one word is normal, no words is normal.

Liebs didn't call me "mammy" until he was over 2 years old. He much prefered Da.

No real words here at 13 months. Maybe 'mamama' and 'dadadada' with some purpose, but its hard to tell. Plenty of babbling in his own strange language. I'm not worried.

Leasha, my daughter wasnt a big talker either. When she was 1, I think all she really said was 'mummy', 'daddy', 'bye bye', 'hi'.

Then all of a sudden, when she was about 18-20 months old (i cant remember exactly when!), she had a word explosion and practically overnight, she could say HEAPS more words like nanna, shoes, poo, yes, pants, hat, book, baby, dog, car...
