Sunglasses - is it rude to wear them indoors?

Often I wear my sunglasses inside. For example, if we are shopping, Bunnings etc. I find it inconvenient to take them off and replace them with my other glasses, especially if I am chasing the kids, trying to get everything organised or we change from outside to inside frequently. My sunglasses are also prescription glasses.

They are not really dark and you can see my eyes through them.

Anyway, do you think it is rude to wear them inside? My DH thinks it is and I disagree. To me, glasses are glasses. Without them I have very blurry vision and in bright lights, my eyes water and it becomes uncomfortable.

So, what do you think?

I'm in the same boat - I've got precription sunnies. My old pair would have the lenses that returned to normal when you went inside but DD broke those so am back to just the ordinary sunnies.

I just make sure I shove them on my head if I'm talking to someone at the checkout etc. I think it's rude to expect people to talk to you if they can't see your eyes, otherwise no biggie if you're just wandering around.

If I'm just popping in and out of somewhere well lit (LOL) I don't bother taking my sunnies off and replacing them with my glasses, and sometimes I just forget. I don't take them off or put them on top of my head to talk to people because I figure that squinting at them is probably just as bad. As the sun glare up here is pretty full-on, it's not uncommon for people to wear sunnies inside.

my dad has his ordinary glasses tinted to almost sunglasses darkness as he has very light sensitive eyes and just can't cope with the glare - so i guess i'm used to it. sometimes i find it a bit annoying as i can't see his eyes - but mostly i can and it doesn't bother me

i have clip on sunnies - had the transitions ones that changed color and they drove me insane! so now i have magnetic sunnies - sometimes i forget to take them off for a while - i don't care though - people can get over it! my eyes are almost as sensitive as my dad's so i wear them all year round and whenever my eyes aren't coping

I feel a bit awkward talking to someone if I'm wearing sunglasses and they're not. I would think that it would be a bit rude to leave them on for a long indoor conversation with a someone you know, but I wouldn't worry about wearing them going through the checkout at Bunnings, especially as yours are also prescription glasses.

maybe its just me, but i think its rude to wear sunnies inside if your talking to someone (checkout, run into some you know) where i work (subway) i hate it when people where sunnies inside coz you cant se there eyes and whether or not they are paying attention, 'hello, im making your freakin lunch here' LOL
i wear sunnies 24/7 (pretty much) coz i wear them so much, when dont wear them i end spuinting and i get a headache, but i always take them off inside, i dont care if people wear them walking around or whatever, most times when i see poeple with sunnies on insdie i envy how they can still walk around and see properly lol

I don't think it's rude, but I will confess it bugs me if I'm talking to someone and can't see their eyes.

I wonder why it's considered rude to talk to someone inside with sunnies on, but not outside? The effect is the same whether one is inside or outside - ie: the eyes can't be seen. I mean, it's obviously because it's not considered necessary to wear them inside, but if one would not find it difficult to have a long conversation outside with someone wearing sunglasses, then why would it be so if they were worn inside? :dunno:

I guess it's one of those things like wearing a hat inside is 'traditionally' considered rude. I don't like dh wearing a hat inside but I will some times wear my sunnies inside if I am ducking into a shop etc but I will take them off at the check out ;) If I were somewhere inside that is a social event I would consider it rude to be talking to people with the sunnies on.

DH is from a more traditional generation so that might be why he has issues with it.

I have migraines - it is NOT rude to wear sunglasses indoors or in shopping centres. Not if taking them off means you are in pain.

(For women, it isn't rude to wear a hat indoors. Think about weddings: it's expected!)

I personally dont find it rude, each to their own but it does make me uncomfortable when i serve somebody at work and cant see their eyes.

I wasn't referring to woman at a wedding or a funeral or at an indoor horse race function for that matter. It is considered rude for any gender to wear a hat indoors at any other time. People (men or woman) even get kicked out of RSL's for wearing hats! Teenagers get told to take their hats off in school etc.

Chocaholic You can honestly do what you want, as Lady Zaidie said she gets migraines, people don't know why you are wearing your sunnies! So what if people think you are rude, if you don't care what others think then don't let it be an issue to you...Same with talking to people socially at an indoor event when there is no reason to be wearing your sunnies, if you don't have a problem with talking to others without seeing their eyes and don't find it rude than so what if others think it's rude if you have yours on, if you don't care what others think, don't stress yourself about it. For me I don't particularly care what others think but I am aware of these social ettiquettes and I choose to take my hat off and my sunnies off when talking to people because I some people 'will' find it rude.... Each to their own ;)

Well yes, I do think it's rude to wear sunglasses when you are talking to someone, especially when you are inside.

If you aren't talking to anyone, just wandering around the shops or whatever, it's not rude, but I do think it looks stupid.

I find it very offputting not being able to see someone's eyes when I am talking to them. Even if it is bright outside I will automatically take off my sunglasses when I am talking to someone so they can see my eyes.

If it's someone I don't know well and they are wearing sunglasses and I am not, I don't feel the conversation is on an equal level - I will put my sunglasses back on because I feel like they aren't putting as much effort into communicating with me, like a subconscious self-defence mechanism.

I don't believe the view that "if you don't care what people think you can do what you like" approach is always appropriate. Sometimes it is good to be independent of thought and action, other times it's selfish and just plain bad manners.

ETA: Before I had my eyes lasered, I used to have prescription sunglasses and prescription glasses and I never found it a big deal to switch glasses over.

And, like Curly I will take mine off in a conversation even if it's outside. Not so much a short chat, but if it's getting long & involved, I'll lift the sunnies.I like to see people's eyes when I'm talking to them & I like them to see mine.

I prefer if people take sunnies off when speaking to them, but then that also depends on where we are as well.

If someone had their sunnies on inside I'd just think they were a bit strange LOL.. I can't see a thing with sunnies on inside! hahah.

I really don't care if it's rude. Most shops have the fluro lights that really hurt my eyes and i'd rather wear sunnies then end up with a headache because of squinting and that can develop into a migraine. I made sure i got some that weren't super dark and people can see my eyes though.
